New York - South African playwright Athol Fugard received a special lifetime achievement award at the 65th annual Tony Awards in New York on Sunday.
The Tony's are considered the "Oscars" of the theatre world.
The committee that announced Fugard as the recipient of the award earlier this year noted that his work has always opposed racism and continues to promote the message of freedom and equality.
Fugard has been nominated for six Tony awards in his lifetime.
Athol Fugard is well known as the author of short story Tsotsi; which was adapted into the Oscar-winning film of the same name.
Another one of Fugard’s plays Master Harold and the Boys was also recently adapted into a film starring Freddie Highmore.
