Attack on festival head filmed

Potchefstroom - A woman filmed herself and her husband as they kicked and punched the executive head of the Aardklop arts festival during an argument over the location of a tent on Sunday.

The assault came after the executive head of Aardklop, Andries Vrey, had a row with the owner of the land in Potchefstroom on which the Beeld tent had been erected.

The festival began on Tuesday.

Apart from the kicks that Vrey received from the owner's wife, the owner also punched him a few times on the chest.

Contractors worked for about three days to erect the Beeld tent on the corner of Hoffman and Esselen Street.

When Vrey arrived there on Sunday afternoon, the landowner was busy breaking down the tent.

He didn't damage the tent frame, but pulled off the drapes on the inside.

Difference of opinion

According to Vrey there was a difference of opinion with the man about the use of the land.

He didn't want to elaborate on the reason for the difference of opinion.

"In a moment of anger the man used his hands to get me off his property. His wife used her feet," joked Vrey.

"She decided, while she was kicking me, to videotape it. The man punched me on the chest. The whole time I kept thinking about what to do to solve the problem.

"After we sorted out the incident, we shook hands and told a joke."

Aardklop staff members started erecting the tent again on Sunday afternoon, and it was up by 23:30.

Afterwards Vrey said it was clear that one person's idea of communication could differ monumentally from another's.

Additionally, one person could never be completely in the right.

Vrey said he wouldn't take the matter further.
