Battery9 singer in critical condition

Johannesburg – Artist and singer Huyser Burger is still in a critical condition a week after he collapsed due to acute kidney and liver failure.

Huyser Burger is one of the original members of alternative Afrikaans music group Battery9 and is also known as a visual artist.

Huyser has been known for his hard-partying lifestyle, but he also struggled with a darker, sensitive side that often left him in the grips of depression according to many of his friends.

"He is a genius and the most innovative person that I know in the local music scene," said Sondag's Angola Nel about Huyser.

"Unfortunately he carried a deep-seated pain inside him. He always had. That and an addictive personality resulted in his struggle with heroin for a long time. In 2006 he drank himself out of it. His friends tried to help him, but it was to no use."

Jack Parow said that he is shocked and saddened by the news. "Old Huyser is one of my good friends. A legendary musician. I grew up with Battery9."

'Worrying'

Battery9 co-founder Paul Riekert described Burger as an uncomfortably creative person who is also very stubborn.

Burger was taken up in the Flora Clinic in Roodepoort after he collapsed in Melville.

He has been in the hospital's ICU under strong anaesthetic ever since.

He is currently hooked up to a dialysis machine and a respirator.

Doctors say that his condition is worrying.
