CT hires experts for concert death probe

Johannesburg - The City of Cape Town has appointed a structural engineering firm and a wind shear expert to investigate the collapse of a scaffolding structure which led to the death of a woman and 18 injuries ahead of a Linkin Park concert, mayor Patricia de Lille said on Friday.

The structural engineering firm, Vela VKE, and an aerodynamics expert would investigate and assess the scaffolding structure which collapsed outside the Cape Town Stadium on Wednesday night, she said in a statement.

"The engineering firm and aerodynamics expert will do on-site investigations and study and review all the necessary documentation.

"They will report back to the city as soon as [it is] practical," De Lille said.

Structure had been pre-approved

The Cape Times reported that Waterfront hotel manager Florentina Heaven Popa was identified as the woman who died when a Lucozade advertising tower collapsed in Cape Town.

The newspaper reported that Popa, 32, was originally from Romania and moved to Cape Town six years ago after falling in love with the city.

She had been employed as the training manager at the One&Only Hotel at the Waterfront. Popa died of severe head injuries.

The structure outside the stadium is believed to have been toppled by wind before the concert. The concert went ahead.

According to the city, the structure had been pre-approved and certified as safe before the event. De Lille said wind speeds that evening had reached up to 75km/h.

"It was just one of those nights where women had to hang onto each other."
