Celebs give 67 minutes for Madiba

Cape Town – A number of celebrities in the entertainment industry donated 67 minutes out of their day to help others in honour of Nelson Mandela's birthday reports TimesLive.

Singer Kurt Darren and his wife Dunay treated 10 less fortunate girls to a "makeover day" at their Limpopo game farm.

"They were spoiled with facials and creams...they also had a pyjama party," said Darren.

Actress Natasha Sutherland and her two sons also did their bit by helping out at an orphanage in Hillbrow.

Former Miss South Africa Kerishnie Naiker served her community by visiting the Joseph Gerard retirement home as well as the Sithandiwe care centre for the disabled in Johannesburg.

Naiker also took blankets, books, toys and clothes to the centres along with her colleagues at Netcare where she is head of communications.

High point

Madiba's birthday celebration reached a high point on Saturday when a giant artwork consisting of 67 hand prints and signatures of local and international stars was auctioned off during a gala evening.

The artwork fetched R2.5m and featured hand prints and signatures of Fifa President Sepp Blatter, Prins Albert of Monaco, former President  FW de Klerk, American actor Morgan Freeman and Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu.

Oscar winning actor Djimon Hounsou and his wife Kimora Lee Simmons, prince Harry's ex-girlfriend Chelsy Davy, Ashwin Willemse, Elana Meyer, Jimmy Dludlu, Patrice Motsepe, Kenny Kunene, Dr Mamphela Ramphele en Chester Williams all attended the glamorous occasion.

The 26 local celebrities, who have been touring across the country on motorcycles since July 11  and stopped at various locations to donate their 67 minutes, will be arriving in Johannesburg on Monday.

Celebrities who took part in this special tour organised by the Nelson Mandela Foundation include 2011 Survivor winner Hykie Berg of Binnelanders and 5FM DJ and host Anele Mdoda.
