DA: Hofmeyr comments 'repugnant'

Johannesburg - The Democratic Alliance (DA) on Tuesday condemned the comment by musician Steve Hofmeyr that "propaganda of entitlement" among black people was behind the murder of a Free State family.

"Hofmeyr's statement that black South Africans 'suck up the propaganda of entitlement in order to justify their brutality' is profoundly repugnant," DA Arts and Culture spokeswoman Annelie Lotriet said in a statement.

"It demonstrates deep-seated prejudiced views that are completely inconsistent with the values that inform our constitutional state," she said.

It also lowered the standard of constructive political and social debate, and set back efforts to build a truly non-racial, compassionate South African society, she said.

Hofmeyr last week wrote on his Facebook page, in Afrikaans, that: "Blacks (God knows, probably not all of them, but most of those I observe) feel justified and "entitled" in everything, from quotas-low matric marks to land rights-brutality."

"We MUST generalise. Most black people I know are not violent, but they slurp up the PROPAGANDA OF ENTITLEMENT, [that's] exactly what gives young killers what they need to justify their brutality," he wrote, said the report."

Angered by murder

Hofmeyr was referring to the murder of Attie Potgieter, his wife Wilna and their three-year-old daughter Willemien on their farm in the Free State last week.

Lotriet said that Hofmeyr's comments showed there were still citizens who were severely detached from the values of modern society, and who held prejudical views.

"Every South African who is committed to building a compassionate society should reject Hofmeyr's comments.

"They are more reminiscent of a bygone era of racial domination under apartheid than the kind of conversation one expects to hear in a multiracial democracy in 2010," she said.
