Darren Scott faces racism complaint

2011-09-07 08:30

Johannesburg - Jacaranda 94.2 breakfast show host Darren Scott has been accused of making racist remarks towards a colleague, according to a report on Wednesday.

The radio station's spokesperson, Jenny Griesel, confirmed to Beeld newspaper that a case of misconduct was being investigated against him.

"Jacaranda 94.2 is aware of the fact that a complaint has been laid against him," said Griesel.

Scott was not broadcasting this week, but this was merely to give him an opportunity to prepare for the Rugby World Cup, said Griesel.

"He is not off the air because he was suspended," she said.

Beeld said two independent witnesses told the newspaper that he swore and shouted at a colleague and made racist remarks at the Mabula lodge in Bela-Bela on Friday evening during a team building event.

      - These racism accusations are really wearing thin. Much like the apartheid scapegoat , they are convenient tools for covering up the users inferiority complexes and failures.

      Gazza69 - 2011-09-07 10:18

Aah the race card!! Evertime the competence of the individual is questioned....they scream racism!! Get over yourselves!

When will every south african realise that this poor treatment of each other is unacceptable especially from the section of our community that have benefitted unfairly.

      Kevin - 2011-09-07 12:40

So I suppose the team building exercise did not work . Fire the team building company and the rude women who can only make a contribution by pulling the race card . Go Darren ,you good thing

      The Observer - 2011-09-07 13:55

sabc10 and when will the people in this country start doing things themselves in stead of blaiming others for their sort comings like a certain section of our community that is now benifitting unfairly

      ExleOnSaneSt - 2011-09-07 14:17

Agree totally Marc...Have had to endure him for years on 5FM and Supersport...always had my suspicions about him being racist..never quite confirming them...However there was one thing I was sure of...Daren is a world-class pri*k..arrogant and full of himself..and that's nothing to do with race...I would say the same if he was black..Amazing how so many on this forum seem to think that whites being racist can be condoned now because we have idiots like Malema running around..it is only logical that there are remnants of our racist detritus lingering...you see them with their old flags at Rugby matches...we know you're there and you bring shame to our country and to the many whites who are wonderful people and have embraced their fellow South Africans.

      dagwood4455 - 2011-09-07 20:21

I agree. Dealt with him in '94, behaved like a prima donna idiot.

  • TLR - 2011-09-07 08:59

Yes; ANC leaders can make gross racist remarks with their speeches: "whites are criminals" and nothing happens.

      Felix - 2011-09-07 09:22

Mark you are clearly a racist in support of the politicians racist statements. Why then do you complain about remarks made by TLR? See what I did there?

      kwezi - 2011-09-07 09:29

It is this type of comment that keeps on amazing me. Julius Malema has become the yardstick. If he says some something, than anybody has the right to be equally racist or rude. And also: "nothing happens"? Plain stupid and ignorant or selectively not telling the truth. Julius, mr (or ms) TLR is facing a disciplinary hearing. Scott is arrogant and rude and tries his best to be a comedian but indulges in personal and derogatory remarks as his yardstick for humor. May he be released from all broadcast duties. Like Julius is hopefully going to be from his forums.

      green_goblin - 2011-09-07 09:41

Kwezi as much as I get what you are trying to say. The thing is what upsets and infuriates people is the fact that Malema and his like get away with saying these things and somehow manage to turn it into "its the whites fault". I do agree that people should not lower themselves to that level but a racist comment is a racist comment. If Darren did do this he should be punished but in the same token so should all the other public figures who constantly do it on screen and in public.

      Felix - 2011-09-07 11:43

Damn it Mark, why remove your comment? I should have quoted you chicken little.

      Mark Singh - 2011-09-07 11:54

Felix, i did not remove my comment. News24 did. I am not a racist as you assume and imply. I was merely implying that TLR's comment about racist comments made by politicians indirectly showed her support for Darren. One cannot justify a racist comment made by a White with one made by a Black. I am neither in favour of what the racist politicians say nor in favour of Darrens alleged remarks. I hope this clears my stance on racism. It is what is ruining our country and creating an even greater chasm between all race groups.

      Felix - 2011-09-07 13:03

Thanks Mark, that puts us on the same team ;). I think you'll find that TLR was commenting on the fact that there are different standards when it comes to racism in this country which does not mean he/she condones whatever Darren said but rather treat all cases equally. My remark neither assumes nor implies that you are racist, merely points out this ambiguity and hypocracy in your original post.

      Owami - 2011-09-07 21:29

For crying out loud, can we leave the ANC out of it?

yep, uncouth, rude, sexist. Certainly the way he comes across in public and private. That said, it takes all types to make the world go round and I am almost more sick of people who make a living being offended.

      Wayne - 2011-09-07 09:40

I enjoy Darren but unfortunately I do know he is sexist as he made a very perverted remark to my ex wife a few years ago. Okay he was drunk but still offsides. I guess fame makes some people a little dilly at times. However I have a feeling this situation has deeper undertones.

  • Otello - 2011-09-07 09:49

Darren is so bored as presenter of Boots and All, and so boring. Yawning and stretching at the close of the show. The energy level is so low when he acts as host, not even the occassional appareance of the live-wire John Robbie can save it. Very unfortunate as Darren, when the show was launched, was an excellent anchor. Now he is barely going through the motions. The Oprah Winfrey of South Africa with his weight gain and loss issues, it has all become very stale and predictable.

There is no excuse for making those types of comments since they end up degrading the peson on the receiving side and the one making the comment. It degrades both their dignities and the one who made the comments will be classified as racist. I am so disapponited if people like Darren Scott stoops so low because we see them on tv and think they love people and are people's persons too. I don't want to judge but short fuse or not, is disgusting.

There is no justification for any form of racism. All those that attempt to justify any such behavior are likely to be racist themselves. Unfortunately racism is ingrained into the fibre of many white South Africans. Hopefully with time things will change.

      Sme - 2011-09-07 12:22

Just white South Africans? What a generalisation? So the Black South Africans aren't racist? Hmmmmmmmm, what a silly comment

      TimothyJ - 2011-09-08 06:22

@Sme. Not really. Yes, it strikes me that all South Africans are racist. Given our history this is not a surprise. But the white racism hurts blacks more (much more) than black racism hurts whites. I don't know why this is, it just is. I think maybe it’s got something to do with 'taking it from where it comes...' It is not right, obviously, and like so much of what is broken in SA today Apartheid is to blame. Obviously. And even though the Apartheid period of our history is over now whites have been unable to put down the master/ servant relationship that was condoned; encouraged even, during the Apartheid years. It’s certainly subtle, but the master/ servant attitude whites have toward blacks is absolutely the bedrock that South African racism sits in. Still - 17 years on - it is passed down from parent to child in many households. Sounds like Darren Scott’s is one of them.

I found this on his jacaranda profile page "I HATE...racists, people who cannot drive and butternut" You Hypocrite I am so glad people are finally seeing the real racist mysogynistic pig that you really are! I hope this lady goes the distance with this complaint.

  • Agwambo - 2011-09-07 11:31

Is it surprising? This forum is a good example of people refusing to move with times. change guys, change, don't be racists..

      Felix - 2011-09-07 15:20

      Especially the whites hey agwambo?

  • reader4444@24.com - 2011-09-07 11:43

Please, someone in the subbing department, please look in a dictionary for the word "preposition", study it carefully and then look up "towards". Now tell us how anyone can make "remarks towards a woman" ... if you don't understand, send me a message and I'll explain it in English.

  • democracy - 2011-09-07 11:44

Malema sings Dubul'ibunu and the whole white nation prepares to take up arms ... a prominent white man makes Racist remarks and the whole black nation is labelled as having "insecurities" ... come on. use your superior white minds to think beyond yourselves.

      MissGremlinSays - 2011-09-07 12:01

Since there has been no hearing yet, on the part of the employer, it has not yet been established that racist comments were infact made.

      Shayne - 2011-09-08 17:44

Difference is most whites know that Darren Scott is an idiot, can you same the same for Malema?

  • Rightway - 2011-09-07 11:52

More like an incompetent AA appointee who can,t do her job properly. Play the racist card ... the only one incompetents can play. No one gets shouted at if they do there job properly. The get a pat on the back. Fire this lazy, idiot who operates like the ANC.

      Moi1980 - 2011-09-07 12:37

"No one gets shouted at if they do there job properly" - Really? You've obviously are fortunate enough to have never worked for an abusive employer. There are individuals that, regardless of how good you are at your job, get a kick out of humiliating their employees. Don't jump to conclusions and immediately assume that the said employee is incompetent because she is black.

      Daemos1 - 2011-09-07 12:40

@Rightway It's a bit early in the day for LSD

      realvictim - 2011-09-07 15:35

@Rightway. Not every black person is lazy, just like not every white person, except you, is a racist!

      Owami - 2011-09-07 21:39

...and you have clearly assessed her performance and found her to be incompetent? How very efficient to be able to do from the news24 website.

  • Andrew - 2011-09-07 11:57

He is quiet notorious. Never realised so many people know him, drink with him and have had their wives or female friends harrassed by him. Someone has even dondered him. Feeling a little left out that I have yet to be insulted by him. Only know him from the TV so can only judge him from that. Not my favourite TV personality, a little too smug for my liking.

  • President - 2011-09-07 12:01

I wonder what would happen if we all woke up tomorrow and we were all the same colour?? What would we blame our stupid attitudes on? Half of the people that comment would be rendered speechless and the other half would be scratching their heads wondering why the country has been left to stagnate and be robbed by a bunch of incompetents that think they are in Hollywood. By the time everyone catches a wake up, it will be too late and we all will be doomed to live in squalor.

      Daemos1 - 2011-09-07 12:15

The scary thing is we might find other ways to discriminate, based on language, location, etc. We're already all living in a kind of squalor, we're not at peace in our own country, our government treats us like idiots and we never know if we'll arrive home and find our families killed or raped. The solutions are simple, but the work is hard

      MissGremlinSays - 2011-09-07 12:26

Yep. Do you remember the book by Dr. Seuss - The Sneeches? Some had stars, and some had none. I reckon the guy with the star machine was either a politician or a lawyer...

  • gharri - 2011-09-07 12:24

Racism Card - past it's sell by date! Why don't you rather learn to stand up for yourself or LOVE yourself?? Don't always take the easy way out, it's becomming so overrated!

  • Ed - 2011-09-07 12:28

  • Pragmatist - 2011-09-07 12:28

well if one cant have respect for others then one needs punishment....

  • Damian Parker - 2011-09-07 12:29

@motsokwi what does Malema have to do with Darren Scott ? But to answer your question: Malema is victim of being a dumbass, nothing to do with race If a white person acted and says the things he does, people would say the same.

  • GinSA1 - 2011-09-07 12:42

"He is not off the air because he was suspended," she said. HUH? Is it me?

      Owami - 2011-09-07 21:40
