Gareth Cliff producer suspended for F-word

2012-08-07 11:03
Cape Town - Gareth Cliff is letting the Twittersphere know how he feels about the word "Fuck", reports IOL.

The 5FM jock tweeted early on Tuesday morning that executive producer Thabo Modisane had been suspended for a week because the expletive was audible in a soundbite played during Cliff's breakfast show.

IOL reports that Cliff contextualised the tweet on air, explaining that Modisane had let the F-word be audible in a clip and his suspension was due to one listener complaint.

Cliff's tweets read as follows:

He then attempted to get the word trending on the social networking site, without much success. *

The BCCSA recently dismissed a case against Cliff where he referred to a female caller as "Dear Bitch".

*According to one of Cliff's later tweets, the expletive was trending early on Tuesday. However, at the time of publishing this article (10:55), #fuck was not trending on Twitter in South Africa.

Don't see what the harm is in the dreaded F-word or any other "swear words". It's only as relevant as we make it. Remove the stigma and they become regular words. If you don't want kids to hear or be exposed to things you don't deem fit, don't have kids. I find the screaming of rugrats to be a lot more disturbing than any word.

      julian.booyens - 2012-08-07 11:29

So then Buzz you would have no problem at all if your child tells you to F@#k OFF! as there is no harm right?

      tyron.fawcett - 2012-08-07 11:33

Julian if you cant teach your child manners thats not our problem

      anthea.lagrange - 2012-08-07 11:36

Sure you would love to hear your cherubic two year old daughter saying it? Not cool.

      michael.a.collins.9659 - 2012-08-07 11:45

Yes Julian.... teach ur kid manners......

      julian.booyens - 2012-08-07 11:56

tyron and michael please learn to read, go back and look at my comment above and see where I mentioned if it was my child?

      klippies.coke.7 - 2012-08-07 11:59

I use the "F" word left, right and center. I don't find it offensive when someone uses it in my company. Does that make me a better or worse person? I don't know, however, I do know when I am in civilised company I don't use it. Why not: because of respect. Not every one deems the word acceptable and I respect that. I try not to use it in front of children either, because it is just WRONG. If we start slipping with values that we were taught, what is the world going to turn into. Come on man, I don't mind you swearing but have some respect for other people. And for those of you that gives me a thumbs down: F U!

      michael.a.collins.9659 - 2012-08-07 12:09

      Getting touchy Jules!!!! chill dude...

      anthea.lagrange - 2012-08-07 12:10

Wayne have you ever had a two year old? It takes years to teach kids decent manners, but just swear in the traffic once...

      buzz.rsa - 2012-08-07 12:11

@Julian: Firstly, I have no interest in having kids. Already enough umwanted children out there. Secondly, a kid could just as well say "Stuff off!" of "bugger off!". The sentence is the offending bit, not the word. The F-word only has power becuase we put it on a taboo pedestal. Stop making the F-word so relevant and it won't be relevant to kids. Make "potato" a dirty word and it would become exciting for kids to use.

      klippies.coke.7 - 2012-08-07 12:27

@Buzz, I applaud you for not having kids. With your kind of attitude the future can only be a better place without you having kids. Let me ask you a question, would you swear in a job interview? I mean, if the potential boss does not like it you can always tell him what you think of it?

      johleneh - 2012-08-07 12:28

@ Anthea, ag please, I have a beautiful, angelic looking 3 year old, like ALL kids she picked up some "bad" words and it took me about 3 weeks to ensure she understood it is NOT words for her to use, now she doesnt use them, unless she acts out and wants attention. ALL kids do this, it won't kill them and certainly won't teach them bad manners. ITS HOW WE REACT TO THESE THINGS THAT MATTER! for goodness sake what do you people want to do, place kids in plastic bubbles???

      leon.puth - 2012-08-07 12:30

Buz you shouldnt have kids. you wont be an good parent. Potato is something you eat, not an act which, once discovered, will rule and ruin a child. if its ok to say the f word left rigth and centre, then it must be ok to do it left right and centre. you dont understand children, nor class or good manners. the f word is offensive , agressive and indicates force. no matter how you intended it that is how society understands it

      willie.vanschoor - 2012-08-07 12:42

Is there anybody in SA not freezing their arses off......sorry was I suppose to say butts.

      buzz.rsa - 2012-08-07 13:33

@ Klippies: I swore during my last interview and landed the job within 15 minutes of the interview. Just becuase a person chooses not to limit their speech to what others deem acceptable words is not a reflection of poor character or morals.

      buzz.rsa - 2012-08-07 13:44

@ Leon: Thank you for your opinion on my parenting potential, I'll make sure I refer all prospective parents I meet to you for your professional opinion... not. Ooooh, I see. The problem is not the words, but the act. Heaven forbid children find out about sex, let's lock them all in padded rooms till their 18 for their own protection. Wait, is sex also a dirty word? Sex might have ruined your sad life, but it certainly hasn't ruined mine. As you said; society is the problem, the word isn't the problem. Remember when Mandela was a bad word?

      klippies.coke.7 - 2012-08-07 14:04

@Buzz, I can't wait to find out where you work... come on, make something up quickly.

      KingPro - 2012-08-07 16:40

I have a problem with people who want to impose their agendas onto the masses. If you don't like hearing profanity then I suggest you change the motherf**king radio station!!! If you take a look at 5FM's description on FB you'll realise that they are a radio station aimed at the youth... That being said I don't understand why the person complained to the BCCSA considering the youth use that word indiscriminately. Furthermore, those who'll defend the complainant and the BCCSA's decision to suspend Thabo Modisane by making reference to the children that are listening and their young and impressionable minds, I implore you to consider this... You might be guilty of taking your kids to a fancy restaurant or on a flight where mature adults don't want to be disturbed by your rug rats and yet we (the mature adults) DON'T complain. That's why some people choose to leave their offspring at home because they KNOW that some places aren't child-friendly, 5FM is no different!!! This is tantamount to walking into an Adult Shop with your kid and then complaining about your child seeing porn, hahaha!!! Lastly if you've got SUCH a problem with the use of so-called \bad language on radio, you'll find that we in South Africa are fortunate enough to have a cornucopia of radio stations to cater to your listening needs. The fact that they might not be as treandy or as up to date as 5FM is something you'll have to deal with as this is a consequence of your inability to overlook the odd bit of profanity here and there. I personally can deal with hearing a few: \f**ks, s**ts, a**es, c**ts and b****es\ if it means not having to put up with the drivel that is spewed out by the likes of East Coast Radio, Jacaranda, Highveld and their ilk...

      jason.vanderspuy.5 - 2012-08-07 17:32

I think Buzz's real name is Gareth Cliff, lol. Some sharp commentary Buzz. Unfortunately we have to conform to the values of society we live in, whether we like it or not. Until those values change of course. Swearing aloud in public, walking around naked in public, smoking a joint in public, etc is unfortunately still taboo. Just my opinion

      victor.tamaranui - 2012-08-07 17:37

      Morals Buzz....Morals mate...heard of them ??

      merven.halo - 2012-08-08 07:26

@Victor - morals is a matter of opinion. For whites it is immoral to have more than one wife, yet according to the many blacks it is not wrong. So who is 'moral'?

      kelvyn.davidson.1 - 2012-08-08 14:00

Buzz , good for you, I have kids, Teens, and I swear, my kids are well balanced and educated enough to understand the impact swearing can and may have on others, the key is to mind full when using strong language. for those who crit and use kids as an excuse or example, shame on you, shame on all of those who bemoan an others choice of vocab being offended is not the person using the language 's fault but your own, turn a deaf ear, walk away, turn off the radio, dont buy parental guidance CD's and dont watch any movie rated 13 and over, but most of all dont force your draconian morals on us all. perhaps you should all just Buzz off ?

  • charles.wolfaardt1 - 2012-08-07 11:24

Gareth Where do you draw the line. Let one word through & then the next. Then at the end of the day all you would hear is definetely not English or any other language , but just swearing & name calling. Please do unto others that you would others do unto you

      wesley.bischoff - 2012-08-07 12:05

So if you don't like it, don't listen to it. Simple

Gareth Cliff is so common, honestly respect your listeners!! they are the ones that keep you working!

      MarkSchrade1980 - 2012-08-07 11:42

I reckon the majority of his listeners don't care

      Jou naam is KOMMEN

      graeme.sears.7 - 2012-08-07 12:06

Exactly! Out of ALL the listeners there was ONE complaint! Keep up the good F&%*$ng work Cliff!

      skootzie - 2012-08-07 12:12

Nobody is forcing the people to listen to his show, and since 5FM only received one complaint then obviously Gareth's general audience aren't too phased about the use of such a petty little word.

      gary.robarts.1 - 2012-08-08 07:11

no clarissa its your gutter standards that are sadly kommen

      Jo.Davies123 - 2012-08-08 12:22

How does Thabo's mistake make Gareth common? It is the Executive Producers job to ensure the editting is done. If he is so common, why does he continue to win awards and keep one of the hottest time slots in radio?

      ockert.niekerk - 2012-08-08 16:21

Is it just me or are most of the people on earth actually commom? Seeing that we are A: The species that populates most of earth is great quantities and B: Very few of us are royalty? Hence almost all of us are commoners...Thus refering to someone as common because he says @uck a lot,you mean that all commoners use th word alot? Does that mean someone of royal disposition listens to his show?

      Pinkdragoon88 - 2012-11-15 14:11

@Abigail -Why dont you go and start listening to RSG? Sure they will please ur kind.

  • LourensdL - 2012-08-07 11:42

I wanted to say its a sign of the moral decay continuing but actually I think it has got more to do with the poor guy's limited vocabulary. He just does not know any other words to express himself. Its fck this and fck that and fck everybody. Ag shame, I feel so sorry for him.

      skootzie - 2012-08-07 12:06

I - as a case in point - swear a lot around the guys (I (try to) keep it polite around women though) but every one of them will attest to the scope of my vocabulary. Swearing is not indicative of a stunted vocabulary, some people just don't have a problem with it and use it. It might be a good idea to remember that before mouthing off about something you know nothing about: i.e: the extent of the man's vocabulary.

      ockert.niekerk - 2012-08-08 16:24

How can you comment on vocabulary and then use a word like " Ag " ? Maybe you should look at your self first?

  • anthea.lagrange - 2012-08-07 11:42

What I find so puzzling is that someone complained about the swearword (once, an accident)but nobody finds the lyrics of some of the songs they play on Radio 5 offensive.I cringe sometimes at the blatant vulgarity , references to drugs, gangsterism and group sex. Have we become desensitised to this already?

      crazyjourno - 2012-08-07 11:57

O, get a life. The world has been like this since like forever!

      gary.robarts.1 - 2012-08-08 07:06

  • graeme.sears.7 - 2012-08-07 11:48

Correction! Check his TL again, it was trending. That one person shouldn't listen to 5fm, they should compile cds for themselves and ensure they're sheltered from this horrible place where the "F-word" is thrown around with abandon! Sensitive Fork!

  • blignault.michaele - 2012-08-07 11:53

Gareth, the idiot of note. If swaering is cool it would appear in our courts, newspapers, schoolbooks, the like...what don't you understand Mr. Clott [sorry Cliff]

      graeme.sears.7 - 2012-08-07 12:10

You're a fool, why would slang appear in any of one of those examples? Which planet do you live in where courts try to be "cool"? What don't you understand about formal documentation?

  • SirFGrumpy - 2012-08-07 11:58

What a "doos"! Fortunately I never listen to the radio unless forced to by circumstance and so I am never subjected to the inane drivel that comes out of his mouth!

@gary,anthea,shaun - Is it not at all plausible to you that there are people with opinions diffrent to your own? I don't agree much with Gareth but share his opinion that a man should not lose his work over " the FFFFFFFFFFFFF-word " as you should call it. Have you never used it,thought it?Would you be fine with it if you, your children, parents were sacked because of its use? Why give such a silly and non poetic word so much power? Really easy to judge others, isn't it?

      anthea.lagrange - 2012-08-08 18:00

Ockert I don't have a problem with the F word . I agree that suspending him over that was a bit harsh when the truth is they get away with worse on a daily basis. The problem on this thread is an obnoxious child who thinks she can argue with adults.

      lynda.schenck - 2012-08-07 13:44

Gareth didnt make the "slip up". Maybe you should go back to your English class to learn to read. His producer swore....

      cindy.naude.79 - 2012-08-07 14:48

@lynda oh dear, seems you need some reading lessons too :) his producer didn't swear, he failed to edit a swearword out of something broadcast on radio :P as for the actual issue (the broadcasting of the f-word), i don't get it, the lyrics of most of the drivel played on 5fm contains reference to drugs, sex and an abundance of swearwords, and that's okay? but one tiny little slip of the f-word and he gets suspended? ridiculous!

      dakey.ras.73 - 2012-08-08 09:53

Has little to do with using a particular word. Has to do with not being able to maintain a quasi normal level of professionalism for a broadcasting company. It is really THAT difficult to not curse when broadcasting to millions of listeners? That's the equivalent of a camera man at CNN walking behind the news anchor with nothing but his underwear. C'mon, hold yourself to higher standards.

I personally can deal with hearing a few: \f**ks, s**ts, ar**s, c**ts and b****es\ if it means not having to put up with the drivel that is spewed out by the likes of East Coast Radio, Jacaranda, Highveld and their ilk...

  • jason.kupritz - 2012-08-07 19:25

Who ever suspended them must obviously be a saint....don't think it was intentional to swear on air!

  • boltonbarry - 2012-08-07 19:50

Garreth Cliff. Off is the general direction in which i wish you would F**k

  • russellblack.cowan - 2012-08-07 20:08

Gareth, You said it...LIKE A BOSS. These stupid childish people must just get over themselves and must realise that we live in the modern age where freedom of speech is allowed, not in the dark ages any more where you'd get your head chopped off for saying the wrong things. This is the most childish thing I've ever heard.

      Kelly - 2012-08-08 10:13

The point is not that we are childish and need to grow up, Gareth C is just not so popular!! Sorry I didn't say it too load did I..

      mike.bundy.73 - 2012-08-08 18:50

Freedom of speech should not mean freedom to deliberately offend. So you agree then that toddlers and pre-teens should be using the F word? All and any words that they wish?

  • popeye.sailor.1884 - 2012-08-07 20:11

I can not tell you what I think of Gareth Cliff because I would be suspended for using the C- word.

  • cliff.slabbert - 2012-08-07 21:12

Is it difficult to keep it clean? What is the problem?

  • quentin.harley - 2012-08-07 23:44

People who swear constantly are just like smokers that do not respect anyone else enough NOT to smoke in public places. So, you like talking like that? Sure. Someone else might like having sex even more. Would you like it if he did it in public? Guess not...

      mike.down.5492 - 2012-08-08 13:43

Let us play the worlds smallest violin for you &@@$$&& off

  • burningdogz - 2012-08-08 07:29

Hmmmmmm . . . . Very quick to say: ". . . don't like it then don't listen . . ." but it sadly only applies if it doesn't affect us personally in any way shape or form. The fact is that 5fm is a public radio station and has signed a code of conduct to act in a certain way. This code of conduct ensures the listeners that they can listen to the station knowing that certain things will not be uttered. Period. Don't like the code of conduct? Don't broadcast. "Yeah but only certain people find the words offencive!" Yes, and it is out of repect to these people that we at least try to avoid using it in public or why there is certain rules to protect people from these words being spewed over public broadcasting. If Gareth said the dreaded racist "k" word, would everyone then be screaming " . . . if you don't like it then don't listen . . ."? My guess is no. We live in a diverse society with many different cultures and varying levels of moral standards. Hey, by all means, fight the good fight to get a radio station rated for adults so you can enjoy listening whatever the hell you want, but don't force your lifestyle down the throats of others in the same argument that you are fighting for your personal choice or personal freedom. In certain settings one is expected to behave in a certain way out of respect for the fellow man that shares the space with you. Deal with it. Or find a space that allows you to live out your personal tastes.

      phillip.havenga - 2012-08-08 07:32

      I totally agree with you!

  • ellmari.wroe - 2012-08-08 08:11

YOU GO GARETH!! Like you said, we are not 10 years old anymore. Get a life - if you don't like what you hear, you've GOT the option to turn off the radio or to listen to another station, it's as simple as that! 5FM is the best!

      R.A.P.AGE1 - 2012-08-08 08:38

The Public broadcaster isn’t his personal soap box. His daddy doesn’t own the Radio station. He works there, he earns a salary. So he should do what he is employed for, and that is to serve the public, not ensue unrest. He is no better that Old Julius.

      Kelly - 2012-08-08 14:20

Something tells me you have bad taste!! Or maybe it's this cold weather? Did you play in the snow yesterday?

To be fair, if you're listening to Cliff, the last thing you should complain about is inadequate levels of professionalism. Cliff is destined to be the first white president of the people's republic of Limpopo.

  • bob.nixon45 - 2012-08-08 10:11

Gareth Cliff is a self-centred individual who believes that his opinions are "gospel". Swearing is NOT regarded as clever or trendy, it seems that most folk who swear have a poor grasp of language. An easy pointer would be - "Would it be correct to say these words in front of the Queen, Duke, High Priest, Rabbi, Minister etc".

      mike.down.5492 - 2012-08-08 13:45

I don't trust people who don't swear, beware the self righteous ,,,

  • kbsummit - 2012-08-08 10:31

Gareth grow up and ensure that people such as yourself are role models rather than trying to promote unaccetable language on air. What you do in private or how you talk outside of your professional position is your business. Simply put what happened was wrong. we spend years teaching children at school respect of others, manners, appropraite language etc. and here you are are trying to defend the use of foul language. Grow up man!

  • david.g.preez - 2012-08-08 10:31

Why does it bother people that much, they watch television, movies, read, I am sure they socialise and even use the word themselves. Or in my case, I like the Afrikaans version better as it sounds stronger and punches more oompf. The English version is like everyday language in any case...

  • kagiso.sebolai - 2012-08-08 11:10

lol aye aye Cliff...If u dnt like wat u hearing change the frequency

  • Harold Chisimba - 2012-08-08 11:58

Oo no! No radio personality spills beans of racism like GARETH CLIFF,But.if he perpetuates just unsympathetically push him over the CLIFF.
