German Beer Fest to hit CT, JHB

Cape Town – A true German beer festival will be held in both Johannesburg and Cape Town in celebration of the Bavarian tradition of Oktoberfest.

The beer festival will be held from September 28 until October 1 at the Newlands Brewery in Cape Town and from October 26 until October 30 at Montecasino in Johannesburg. Plans are being discussed to host the festival in Durban and Port Elizabeth next year.

The idea of hosting a local Oktoberfest was hatched by The Entertainment Group.

One of the organisers, Brett McKenzie said that the festival is supported by the German government and the German - South African chamber of commerce.

Spirit of Bavaria

“Our Beer festival will certainly not be like the beer gardens schools have to raise funds. SAB is going to brew us three variants of Bavarian beer and we will only be using special Bavarian glass mugs - there won’t be a paper cup in sight,” added McKenzie

Furthermore, real German mädchen (girls) are being brought here to train local German speakers in serving visitors, and there will also be a brass band and traditional Bavarian food.

Certain evenings will be set aside for companies to enjoy while other nights will be open to the public.

The Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany attracts up to 5 million visitors each year.
