Government drops Makeba show

Pretoria - The arts and culture department has withdrawn its support of the Miriam Makeba commemorative event and instituted legal action against the production company, director general Themba Wakashe said on Wednesday.

"It was a very difficult decision for us to take," he told reporters in Pretoria.

It was not known if the Makeba tribute planned for this weekend by production company Morris Roda was still going ahead. The department would play no part in it.

"We have not been provided with the necessary assurances as to the state of readiness that would have made this event possible. We regret that the names of artists have been used to promote this event without their consent," he said.

The matter would be heard in the High Court in Pretoria on Thursday.
