Hofmeyr supports media tribunal

Cape Town - Steve Hofmeyr has confirmed that he is in favour of the proposed media tribunal.

"The fact that the media doesn't answer to anyone is the epitome of fascism," Hofmeyr said on Tuesday in Herolds Bay.

According to Hofmeyr, he has been a victim of the media and he knows other people who have found themselves in a similar position.

Although he didn’t want to generalise, he said he feels the media often "goes too far".

After 25 years in the entertainment industry it is his experience that 95% of the media deserve their jobs.

"It's the paparazzi who have become the problem over the past 10 years. They feed the curiosity monster.

"The problem with the media is the fact that it's their job to keep institutions on their toes, but the media itself has become the greatest institution of all."

Right to privacy

Hofmeyr believes people have a right to privacy.

"Everything that interests the public is not necessarily in the public interest."

When asked whether the media had helped to build his career, he answered: "I have a contract with the public. I have a relationship with them. The rest are necessary appendages."

Hofmeyr also indicated that he plans to enter the political arena, "but only once the Afrikaner has woken up from his sleep".

He emphasised the fact that, although he is in favour of a media tribunal, he does not support the ANC.

He just feels very strongly that the media should be accountable to someone.

According to him, governments should be 100% transparent.
