Images of Africans down under

When one thinks of Australia, dark-skinned women in kangas probably don’t come to mind, but photographer Atong Atem has captured the imagery of second- and third-generation Africans living down under in a series of remarkable portraits.

The photographs, which are reminiscent of Malik Sidibé’s Malian highlife images, show the strong African identity of the subjects in contrast with their white, Western surroundings.

Atem is originally from South Sudan, but has spent most of her life in Australia.

At its heart, the project is about negotiating the hyphenated identity often experienced by those in the African diaspora
