Irma Stern may break auction record

Johannesburg - A painting by local artist Irma Stern is estimated to sell for between R6.6m and R10m, a new world record for SA art sold at action, a fine art auctioneer said on Tuesday.

The piece titled Bahora girl would feature in the next sale of South African art in London in October, Bonhams spokesperson Julian Roup said in a statement.

Bonhams currently hold the world record for South African art on auction, for a Jacobus Hendrik Pierneef piece which was sold for R9.4m.

Head of South African Art at Bonhams, Giles Peppiatt, was quoted as saying: "We are very pleased with the offering in this sale.

"There are some very strong works by South Africa's leading artists.

"If current trends continue I expect an exciting sale with more records achieved... we are helping to bring an as yet little known group of artists to the attention of the world's art markets."

Another five of Stern's paintings would be on sale at the auction.

Pierneef's masterwork Bosveld would also be on sale and was expected to sell for between R2.2m and R3.3m.
