Stellenbosch - Nobel prize winner and the subject of the late professor John Kannemeyer's last biography, JM Coetzee, has spoken out about the professor's death from his home in Australia.
"I first got to know John Kannemeyer when he visited Australia to conduct a series of interviews with me.
"He struck me as a talented literary critic and a sincere man. He was also a formidable biographer. He will be missed," wrote Coetzee.
Greatest love
Tributes have been pouring in since Kannemeyer, a leading authority on Afrikaans literature, died from a stroke in Stellenbosch on Christmas Day.
His son, Mark Kannemeyer, a visual arts lecturer at the University of Pretoria, said his father "devoted his life to Afrikaans".
"It was his greatest love," said Mark.
Joey Kannemeyer, John's sister-in-law who resides in Robertson, said his death was a big shock. She and John were very close.
Joey's late husband, Freddie Kannemeyer, grew up with John in Robertson.
Joey said John and his partner were at the hot springs in Montagu last week, and while there he complained about not feeling well.
"He was pale and said he had double vision," said Joey.
