Cape Town - Entertainer David Kramer has reacted with shock to the death of musician Helena Nuwegeld who was murdered on Saturday.
"It's devastating news," he told News24. "I heard yesterday (Sunday) morning that she was murdered and what do you say? Really shocking."
Nuwegeld was murdered at a farm near the rural town of Beaufort West along with farm workers Hendrick September and Mannetjie John.
"I've known her for a number of years and I met her through her sister (Sienna Mouwers)," said Kramer.
He said that he'd listened to the music the family made and realised that he wanted to feature it in his production, Karoo Kitaar Blues. But the project also played a role in reuniting the family.
"I discovered that the family had lost touch with each other and through the Kitaar project we brought the family together after about 12 years," he said.
"There was a better connection between Helena and her sister, but she (Nuwegeld) had a strong personality. Some would say she was difficult - she sang when she felt like singing," Kramer added.
He said that she entertained audiences, but didn't "buy into the entertainment business".
"Audiences were spellbound by her and if she was grumpy, that's what you got. You have to compare her to those original blues singers who sang because that's what they felt, not as a way to make money or be on TV," Kramer said.
He added that he's in touch with the family through a neighbour, and that funeral arrangements have not yet been made. He's glad, though, that she's making headlines, albeit in death.
"I'm glad that she's making headlines, these things so often go unnoticed."
