Lot wins big at Kanna Awards

Cape Town - Innovative theatre creator Nicola Hanekom and her outdoor production Lot has been awarded three Kanna prizes.

The Kannas, also called the Karoo Oscars, honours achievements at the Klein Karoo National Arts Festival in Oudtshoorn.

Lot, a poetic and visually attractive production, deals with the fleeting nature of life. It was not only honoured with a Kanna for best production, but Hanekom was also honoured for her precise directing of the challenging piece and named best female artist at the festival.

Lot is the second in a trilogy and Hanekom and her team are already planning the final production in the series of outdoor experiences for next year. It will be called Babylon.

The cast of Lot featured formidable actors such as Stian Bam, Neels van Jaarsveld, Tinarie van Wyk Loots, Bronwyn van Graan, Jacques Theron, Lerato Motshwarakgole and Brendon Daniels. The music was produced by Braam du Toit.

Upcoming artist

The best male artist of the festival was Christo Davids for his portrayal of tik addict Adam Pakkies in My naam/my name is Ellen Pakkies.

This year's classical music offering has been widely praised for its quality. The judges decided to award a special Kanna for best achievement in this genre.

It was presented to pianist Ben Schoeman for his interpretation of Franz Liszt's music. He will also report to the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown as one of the "young artists" at the end of next month.

Boland comedian Shimmy Isaacs, one of the stars at this year's Suidoosterfees, was honoured with a Slurpie Kanna for best upcoming artist. She received it for her comic Howzit my bra! about her growing up in Worcester.

Special Kanna

Rock star Karen Zoid received a Kanna for best debut production for her music production Malaika/My engel with guitar masters Louis Mhlanga and Nick Turner.

Veteran actress Wilna Snyman was honoured for her life's work and the Hertzog prize-winning author Ingrid Winterbach with The Afrikaans Onbeperk prize for Innovative Thinking.

Herrie Kanna for Mind Shifting Work was awarded to artist Diane Victor for her smoke drawings, which were created with a candle flame and soot.

A special Kanna was awarded to Ronnie Samaai and Marietha Channell for their service to the arts.

The Kannas were held at a fancy high tea at the Mount Nelson Hotel in Cape Town on Sunday and the host was Nina Swart.
