Marc Lottering's Smiley gets musical

Cape Town - One of Cape Town comedian Marc Lottering's beloved characters, Smiley "die taxi gaatjie", is getting his own Cape style musical.

David Kramer is working on a brand new comic musical, Some Like it Vrot, which will open at the Baxter Theatre in October this year.

Kramer is teaming up with Smiley's creator Lottering and actor Christo Davids, who will portray the role of Smiley's brother, Fuad.

Other actors

These characters and Lottering's singing talent should be familiar to fans of his shows. It is the first time however that Davids, famed for his role as Errol in 7de Laan and the play My Naam/Name is Ellen Pakkies, will be singing.

Kramer found the musical influences in "R&B, soul and a little bit of rock. I have finished sixteen songs, but I am still working on some of the music".

Kramer, known for his internationally acclaimed musical theatre with Taliep Petersen, like Kat and the Kings and District Six, also directed three of Lottering's comedy shows - From the Cape Flats with Love, Hallelujah & Big Stakes & Slap Chips and as a trio with Nik Rabinowitz and Riyadh Moses Three Wise Men and Three Wiser Men.

The idea to create a musical for Lottering originated during this time.

"Marc likes to work with other actors – at first we started developing something around Auntie Merle, but later decided on Smiley."

Lottering, who is currently touring New Zealand with his show, stars in pantomimes in Johannesburg and is delighted to act in his own musical.

Original Broertjie

Some Like it Vrot began as a spoof of Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon's Some Like It Hot, "but Smiley and Fuad have their own adventures from there". It's set in present-day Cape Town and the adventure flashes between Wynberg, Woodstock, Grassy Park and the Waterfront.

"Smiley and Fuad have to flee after seeing something they shouldn't have seen. They get help from police detective Mercia Meintjies."

In addition to Larissa Hughes as Meintjies, Jill Middlekop plays the part of a nightclub singer, Tammy. The crime boss Big Bucks who smuggles abalone, is played  by Abduragman Adams. The singer Alistair Izobel, who started his career as one of the original Broertjies in the Kramer-Petersen musical District Six, also features in the musical.

Saul Radomsky, who also designed the set of Kat and the Kings on the West End and Broadway and those of District Six, is the set designer.

Some Like it vrot opens October 21 with shows from Monday to Friday at 20:00 and Saturdays at 17:00 and 20:30. Tickets are available at Computicket from R90 to R150.
