Stellenbosch – Internationally acclaimed artist Marlene Dumas will receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Stellenbosch at its March Graduation Ceremony next week.
According to the University of Stellenbosch, Dumas will be awarded the degree Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) honoris causa for the status she has achieved in the international art community, for her role in changing conventional attitudes towards the artistic work of women, and for her commitment to challenging stereotypes of gender and socio-political identity through her art.
Dumas has been internationally recognised since the 1980s and her paintings have been presented in respected international collections.
Her work has been exhibited at galleries around in the world, including those in Japan, the USA, various European capitals and South Africa.
In 1998 she became professor at De Ateliers and also published a selection of writings entitled Sweet Nothings.
