London - The Diamond Empowerment Fund (DEF) together with its founder Russell Simmons and South African supermodel Nicola Breytenbach raised over $1m on Thursday for education in Africa.
The money was raised during a benefit and auction held at Banqueting House in central London.
The sold-out dinner and live auction saw Nicky Oppenheimer, the chairman of De Beers, and Peter Sands, group chief executive for Standard Chartered Bank, being honoured by the charity for their leadership and strong commitment to corporate social responsibility.
In her capacity as The DEF's first African Angel Ambassador, Nicola was joined by fellow angel and model Flaviana Matata. US celebrity Kim Kardashian is also an African Angel Ambassador for the fund.
The star auction item of the night was breakfast with Nicky Oppenheimer which went to a bidder for $260 000.
The DEF has two named beneficiary organisations - CIDA City Campus and African Leadership Academy - both models for access to higher education in Johannesburg, South Africa.
