Nu Metro wins Twilight battle

Pretoria - Ster-Kinekor on Friday lost a court bid to show an early screening of a film licensed to its rival Nu Metro.

In an urgent application in the North Gauteng High Court, Ster-Kinekor asked the court for leniency to screen the vampire move Twilight Saga: Eclipse a minute after Nu Metro was expected to premier it.

Nu Metro argued there was no basis for this as there was no contract given to Ster-Kinekor and therefore it was merely a licensee.

Nu Metro wanted to screen it a minute after the day of its release on June 30 - next Wednesday.

According to the judgment only Nu Metro would be able to show it then.

As a result, Ster-Kinekor would only be allowed to show the film at 09:00 on June 30.

Speaking outside court, Ster-Kinekor's acquisitions and scheduling executive, Paul Burton, said he could not understand how the ruling could be made.

Referring to the recent advertisement of ticket sales, Burton said consumers literally did not have a choice as to which cinema they went to.

"It's far from normal... we can (learn) from what contracts we enter into the future."
