Patricia Lewis suffers health setback

Philip de Bruin
Johannesburg - A second major medical setback has hit singer and TV presenter Patricia Lewis.

She has been diagnosed with high cholesterol, insulin resistance and carbohydrate-hypersensitivity.

Lewis, producer and presenter of the popular series Supersterre on SABC 2, has withdrawn herself from all public appearances for the last 18 months after "distasteful publicity" about a film in which she bared her breasts 17 years ago.

Polyps were found on her vocal cords three years ago and the possibility existed that the removal thereof could've ended her singing career. "What people didn't know then is that the danger existed that I would never be able to speak again."

No more children

Lewis reveals her three new medical conditions in the latest edition of Finesse magazine. She told Beeld on Monday that she's been on a "very strict" diet since the diagnoses.

"People will remember that I looked a bit overweight on the last Supersterre. It was because of these three conditions which I did not know about then. I just couldn't understand why I didn't lose weight. Even my son, Max, started calling me chubby mom.

"I then made the big mistake of going on a gruelling diet, which damaged my body badly. Only then the blood tests were done during which the three conditions were diagnosed."

Although she isn't planning any public appearances, the possibility exists that a new series of Supersterre will be seen later this year. Negotiations about this are in progress.

Her only "other great sadness", she said, is that she and her husband, Mark, will not be able to have more children due to her inactive thyroid.

    Welcome to my world

      Helen - 2012-01-17 10:22

Charmaine. Who the hell cares about these conditions she is supposed to be sufferring from, she is not a spring chicken anymore,as you age you get all sorts of ailments,as for her keeping a low profile since a video of her boobs came out, really the world has already forgotten about them now she reminds us of them again, she obviously needs some publicity.

      TheRealWarrenB - 2012-01-17 12:07

Yeah exactly. "Major medical setback!"??? WTF seriously.

      Max - 2012-01-17 18:03

What a small world. Schabir Shaik and Jacky Selebi suffer or suffered from exactly the same condition.

      GrootWitHaai - 2012-01-17 22:47

I never saw her boobs. Can we have a refresher course on what they looked like please.

  • maria.wayne - 2012-01-17 09:22

You get those "conditions" from lifestyle choices and being overweight - it does not cause obesity, it is a consequence of obesity! And what on sweet earth is "carbohydrate-hypersensitivity" - maybe something like - "I-get-fat-from-eating-too-much-bread/rice/potatoes-syndrome?"

      wesley.bischoff - 2012-01-17 09:48

      Yes Doctor

      Matthew - 2012-01-17 10:44

Very true. Same as anorexia. You dont get poor anorexics.

      Nigel - 2012-01-17 12:46

Just a tad ignorant of you to write this. Actually, it's "I get fat from eating even small quantities of those things". I know because I have the same problem, in my case it's a genetic predisposition. It means that people like me have to forgo anything sweet or starchy just to prevent weight gain. It's frustrating when you don't know the cause, but as soon as you switch to a different way of eating things fall into place. It is true that many people acquire the condition after years of overeating starch and sugar, and may get diabetes but please understand that for a very small number of people it is not brought on by lifestyle. BTW, a "proper diet" means no starch, no sugary stuff and eating lots of leafy type veg, fish, chicken and lean meat. Snack on almond and other nots (but no peanuts). I have no doubt that this diet has saved my life and could help millions of other people who have acquired insulin resistance. I have no desire ever to eat bread or the like again, otherwise I will just pile on the kilos.

      richard.hipkin - 2012-01-17 14:26

Only a doff chick can write such a demeaning insensitive remark like maria just did...

      GrootWitHaai - 2012-01-17 22:49

Sounds like the comment police here are running low on sugar or something. Their bitchometers are in the red.

  • Pete - 2012-01-17 09:24

high cholesterol and insulin resistance are caused by being overweight. It is not the other way around! They don't make people fat. being fat cuases these conditions.

      Clarissa - 2012-01-17 09:50

Pete, Then explain this... I am 1.73 meters tall and weigh 59kg. Which is perfect for my BMI. I live extremely healthy, but why then do I have high colestrol? Go prick your finger and get yourself tested, dude. Then, after knowing the facts, comment!

      wesley.bischoff - 2012-01-17 09:50

If your thyroid becomes inactive then THAT is the cause of a person gaining weight (BMR slows down a lot)... I doubt she sat on her ass all day and ate.

      Pete - 2012-01-17 10:07

Clarissa, high cholesterol can be caused by genetic factors. This is very well known by real doctors. the point is that Patricia lewis believes that her high cholesterol and insulin resistance have caused her to be fat. This is impossible. People always look for excuses for being fat, because they cannot accept that they eat too much and exercise too little. I suggest you get the real facts on this, not from people magazine, but from your doctor (assuming he isn't a homeopath or other quack)

      taniac.swart - 2012-01-17 10:26

I would like to bring to your attention that there is a little demon called cortisol. Stress elevates the levels of the aging hormone, cortisol. Chronic stress cause insulin resistance and increase the risk of diabetes. Stress suppresses thyroid function, causing hypothyroidism. My info come from SOLAL Technologies. So, you see, insulin resistance can become a problem for people that has maintained a healthy body weight. When last have you seen Halle Berry? Has she ever been fat or slighty overweight? NO!! Did you know that Halle Berry is a full blown diabetic? Check your facts and stop being insensitive.

      Pete - 2012-01-17 10:33

taniac, first find out the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes, and then quote halle berry. she has type 1 diabetes which is not related to being overweight at all. I that see you, like Clarissa, also read that great medical journal called You magazine...

      taniac.swart - 2012-01-17 10:40

Uhmmm, yes, and you obviously don't know that after Type 2 diabetes comes Type 1 diabetes? If you don't control Type 2 diabetes, you'll end up with Type 1 diabetes....you're not as sharp as you think.

      Pete - 2012-01-17 10:46

eish taniac, if you don't believe me, check out the types of diabetes on Wiki. They are actually considered to be 2 different conditions. I know this why? well, my son has type 1 diabetes, my mom has type 2 diabetes, and oh yes, i've worked in the diabetes field for 15 years. But what the hell, you read Huisgenoot! you must be right.

      taniac.swart - 2012-01-17 11:01

Pete, I get it, your whole family suffer from diabetes, and I feel sorry for them as this really is a nasty obsticle to have to live with. I don't get my info from You, Huisgenoot or People's Magazine. I do know though that, if you don't get Type 2 diabetes under control, your condition may progress to Type 1 diabetes. This is the info I got from my Doctor as my daughter (16 years old) suffer from insulin resistance. I wish you and your family the best.

      Nigel - 2012-01-17 12:48

Sorry Pete, I know what you are saying is true of many people, but it's not always the case, see my reply to Maria above.

      richard.hipkin - 2012-01-17 14:29

Pete is accusing Clarissa and taniac of getting their info from You magazine, but then mentions wiki as his reference... LMAO!! Poof went his credibility!! Dumb ass..

      GrootWitHaai - 2012-01-17 22:50

So she is just eating too much and all the wrong things. Haibo!!

  • Sandy - 2012-01-17 09:25

  • Irene - 2012-01-17 09:34

Oh for heaven's sake! Is this blonde bimbo looking for more attention?

      richard.hipkin - 2012-01-17 14:31

Is she? Or did a journalist find out and went to interview her? You sound jealous of her successful career and family... Must suck to be you..

      grieta.mitchley - 2012-01-17 15:08

I am way passed the age of jealousy you fool! Do you know what Multiple sklerosis is? Maybe not but it does not matter, people get sick, suffer from ailments, but no one calls it a major setback if you haVE HIGH COLESTEROL!

      grieta.mitchley - 2012-01-17 15:09

Irene this poor point blank oke has a Patricia crush! Shame, he knows so much about jealousy and woman!

      Irene - 2012-01-17 15:27

PointBlank ~ No, hell no, what's to be jealous of? This chick is nothing but an empty-headed bimbo who thought she'd always be able to trade on her body and therefore never developed a personality. But hey, if kommin turns you on, go for it.

      richard.hipkin - 2012-01-17 16:22

@Irene, and you know her personally? Or are you glued to the "skinner" in You magazine? I can see you the type, come on admit it...

      GrootWitHaai - 2012-01-17 22:51

PointBlank you are a snotty little cow. Meouw girlfriend.

  • Deon - 2012-01-17 09:41

This is not a major medical setback, many people suffer from this in SA. a Stroke or heart attack or severe TB or HIV is a major setback. You are just getting a bit older, eat less.

  • taniac.swart - 2012-01-17 10:15

I read the comments of some of the people and I think to myself "You obviously have no idea how bad it is, and how it affects you emotionally when your body start wreaking havoc and chaos." Nobody wants to have to battle with an underactive thyroid (I suffer from one), nobody wants to suffer from food allergies, and trust me, you definately don't want to suffer from high cholesterol (I am a vegetarian, been one as long as I remember, and I suffer from high cholesterol). Nobody want to have to check and count carb portions, and having a sensitivity to carbs most probably means she's wheat intollerant, yeah, try dealing with that on top of everything else!! Like I said, this doesn't just affect you physically, it also gets to you emotionally. Patricia's always been beautiful and it must be difficult to have to deal with these issues. I wish her all the best and hope she'll soon be back to being her old, sparkling, down to earth, beautiful self!!

      Jeffrey - 2012-01-17 10:41

"Patricia's always been beautiful and it must be difficult to have to deal with these issues." So if you're not beautiful it isn't difficult to deal with these issues?

      Gregory - 2012-01-18 08:28

I was listening until you called her beautiful.................. then i just laughed, and I'm still laughing............ A dragon can look beautiful with enough paste on the face

  • jbcloete - 2012-01-17 10:22

How can this be classed as news?????? Lots of us have these conditions and manage it.......please rather report on newsworthy stuff

  • charissa.cannon - 2012-01-17 10:39

Welcome to my world as well I have my tyrods removed and I can never have children tried before having my tyrods removed.

  • taniac.swart - 2012-01-17 10:52

@Jeffrey ~ Patricia's in the entertainment industry, entertainers rely on their looks. Oviously you won't have any idea what this is about, you're a male!! It's hard when all your life you've been lean and didn't have problems battling the bulge, and all of a sudden you have this condition, out of your control, affecting what you look like. What you look like, also affects how you feel. I don't expect you to grasp the concept, like a said, you're male. This is not about vanity either, every single woman I know want to grow old, pretty, gracefully and healthy.

      miss.pandalemming - 2012-01-17 13:06

If she was truly talented, she wouldn't have to rely on looks or a nice body to be successful. Or pathetic litle attention seeking media articles, for that matter...

      richard.hipkin - 2012-01-17 14:30

Have you noticed that the majority of hurtful remarks are coming from females!! LOL!! Woah, jealousy makes you nasty!

  • Zion - 2012-01-17 11:41

Whatever they may say or do you are still the best and outpace them by far. Jealousy always makes them nasty.

      richard.hipkin - 2012-01-17 14:33

Yes I have noticed the most hurtful nasty comments are coming from women.. lol... jealousy.

      Zion - 2012-01-17 16:52

Interesting PointBlank. It may be worth a study to find out why do South Africans love their celebs then for the slightest reason dislike them again. Hate is a bit strong. We saw this phenomenon with Amore vd. Westhuizen, Joost vd Westhuizen, Kurt Darren,Dozy (spelling?)a hoard of rugby players until they miss the beckoning try and of course cricket players who are hated if they lose the world cup. Remember some time back when Patricia Lewis and Amore had the great stand-off while the public went bonkers to decide who is the fairest of them all. Weeeeell, Ok then, I will choose, I dunno man, but it must be and just cannot be anyone else: The great PATRICIA LEWIS, The greatest of them all.

  • Max - 2012-01-17 13:02

Please let this be the end of Supersterre!

  • Leonie - 2012-01-17 13:49

i feel so sorry for Petulia...it's just so awful to suffer like this. Life is a terrible place!!

  • grieta.mitchley - 2012-01-17 14:21

Ag! How many of us suffer from all of this and take is as it comes, now it is a "major" setback just because it is Patricia! What about people who suffers from Multiple sklerosis and just go about their dayly lives as normal as possible until they are paralized or worse!

      richard.hipkin - 2012-01-17 14:34

Because they just normal people idiot.. *sigh* Another jealous woman..

  • richard.hipkin - 2012-01-17 14:31

Have you noticed that the majority of hurtful remarks are coming from females!! LOL!! Woah, jealousy makes you nasty!

      Irene - 2012-01-17 15:29

PointBlank ~ Shame, you have no taste other than going for the common bimbos. Must have been how and where you were brought up. Jumping town ring any bells? ROTFLMAO!

      Charmaine - 2012-01-17 16:44

Common Human Nature, women should stand together in unity, but we can not change every body's mind set. That you for your compassion towards this woman.

      Joelene - 2012-01-17 17:52

It has nothing at all to do with jealousy..Trust me, I can and do apreciate beautiful women.. Just not fake, plastic bimbos who cry at the first sight of a broken nail. Many beautiful, stunning women with REAL problems, yes I'm talking celebs for you who have a thing against normal women...And you don't hear them making a huge and very poorly recorded song about it now do you?

      maria.wayne - 2012-01-17 20:57

"PointBlank" as in how you shoot or how you think?

      GrootWitHaai - 2012-01-17 22:52

      Someone has a stutter.

      Pierre - 2012-01-18 09:28

Irene, you mean Charlize Theron's home town.

  • EyesEars - 2012-01-17 14:32

Every person's body is different and reacts differently to certain foodstuffs etc. And an incative thyroid can get better and active again with correct meds, eating habits and execise, thus it is not a death penalty. Mind over matter, ever heard of it? On the other hand, is it really neccessary that people knows the medical conditions. No insult or punn intended, but it is something that you keep to yourself. IT must still be seen as personal, in my opinion. Please protect your child from the lime-light.

  • Nic - 2012-01-17 15:41

    Who cares ?

      Charmaine - 2012-01-17 16:42

  • Charmaine - 2012-01-17 16:40
