Patricia Lewis suffers health setback

Johannesburg - A second major medical setback has hit singer and TV presenter Patricia Lewis.

She has been diagnosed with high cholesterol, insulin resistance and carbohydrate-hypersensitivity.

Lewis, producer and presenter of the popular series Supersterre on SABC 2, has withdrawn herself from all public appearances for the last 18 months after "distasteful publicity" about a film in which she bared her breasts 17 years ago.

Polyps were found on her vocal cords three years ago and the possibility existed that the removal thereof could've ended her singing career. "What people didn't know then is that the danger existed that I would never be able to speak again."

No more children

Lewis reveals her three new medical conditions in the latest edition of Finesse magazine. She told Beeld on Monday that she's been on a "very strict" diet since the diagnoses.

"People will remember that I looked a bit overweight on the last Supersterre. It was because of these three conditions which I did not know about then. I just couldn't understand why I didn't lose weight. Even my son, Max, started calling me chubby mom.

"I then made the big mistake of going on a gruelling diet, which damaged my body badly. Only then the blood tests were done during which the three conditions were diagnosed."

Although she isn't planning any public appearances, the possibility exists that a new series of Supersterre will be seen later this year. Negotiations about this are in progress.

Her only "other great sadness", she said, is that she and her husband, Mark, will not be able to have more children due to her inactive thyroid.
