Johannesburg - A 40-year-old man was arrested while protesting over a billboard on Johannesburg's M1 highway on Tuesday morning.
Independent Online reported that it was Kaya FM DJ Bob Mabena who had received a call from a listener complaining about the advertisement.
He then left his live breakfast show to protest over the advertisement.
He reportedly later crossed over to his colleague George Manyosi and said: “Handcuffs are not comfortable at all. I wonder how repeat offenders deal with this.
"I guess everyone is doing their job. I was doing my job as a patriotic South African and the police were doing theirs [to enforce laws, including by-laws]. I will start a formal campaign to get everyone on board and I hope this hasn't jeopardised my job.”
"He was protesting against a billboard on the highway advertising warehouse space which features pictures of elephants, and one elephant with the national flag draped over its backside," said metro police spokesperson Wayne Minnaar.
The man was upset about the placement of the flag on the elephant's behind.
The man, who was protesting at 07:40 in peak hour traffic, also shouted at motorists to join the protest.
Some motorists stopped and others hooted.
"The fact of the matter is this was on the freeway," Minnaar said. "He was encouraging other motorists to protest and causing a hazard."
The man was released with a warning but further charges of failing to submit a formal application to protest on a public road were being considered. Minaar said the man's name cannot be mentioned as he is yet to appear in court.
