Potch shooter identified as musician Zirk Bergh

Johannesburg - The man who shot and killed two people, injured his ex-wife, and killed himself in Potchefstroom, was musician Zirk Bergh, the North West premier's office said on Sunday.

Bergh, 36, killed 23-year-old social worker Deon Kondos and Dr Charl du Randt and wounded his ex-wife Nicolette du Randt on Saturday.

Charl du Randt was Nicolette's second husband.

Bergh had an appointment to meet his 8-year-old daughter on Saturday morning, police spokesperson Pelonomi Makau said.

When the ex-wife, her husband and the daughter arrived around 08:00, he pulled out a gun and instructed his daughter to run inside the office of the Suid-Afrikaanse Vrouefederasie (South African Women Federation), where the meeting took place.

"A female friend of the social worker was in the house when she heard gunshots fired," Makau said.

The friend ran out of the house and saw the man and the social worker lying dead next to the road. Bergh left a suicide note which he stated that his ex-wife had denied him access to his daughter. Both the ex-wife and her husband were shot in the head.

Makau said Nicolette du Randt was in a critical condition. Her husband died in hospital.

North West Premier Thandi Modise condemned the killings and said the incident was shocking.

She called on men experiencing pressure in their personal relationships to seek counselling and professional advice instead of resorting to violence.
