Presenters abandon Radio Houtstok

Cape Town – Presenters at Afrikaans radio station Radio Houtstok have severed all ties to the station after claiming that they have not been paid.

The station has been thrown into chaos after the presenters decided to leave the station.

Much resentment is apparent among the group of presenters who disagree with the way the popular Groot Bay based station has been managed thus far.

Previous station manager, Wimpie van der Sandt, confirmed on Tuesday that the presenters have severed their ties to the station.

"There is too much negativity surrounding the station. There is also the question of money. No one can work for free. All of us have families to take care of," he said.

New Afrikaans station

Rumours are circulating that the presenters want to start their own Afrikaans radio station.

Van der Sandt told Die Burger that they are considering all possible options in order to continue with Radio Houtstok.

When asked about the possibility of starting a new radio station, van der Sandt declined comment.

"The calls and support received at Radio Houtstok shows that there is a real future for Afrikaans radio stations in the Cape. We still believe in the station and want to make it work," he added.

Initial shock

Many Houtstok listeners were taken aback on Tuesday morning when the host of the breakfast programme was strangely absent.

The station’s Facebook page subsequently became overrun with conversations and speculations as to why the presenters had left the station.

CEO of Radio Houtstok Louis Baartman confirmed that all the presenters left the station on Monday.

"You have to speak to them about it. At this stage I am not prepared to speak about it," he said.

Baartman took over presenting duties on Tuesday when there was no presenter for the show.

In the meantime only music is being played on the station.
