London - Nelson Mandela was "extraordinary and inspiring" said Britain's Prince William, who was watching the European premiere of a film about the life of the former South African president in London when news of his death broke.
"It was extremely sad and tragic news," he said.
"We were just reminded of what an extraordinary and inspiring man Nelson Mandela was, and my thoughts and prayers are with him and his family right now."
Mandela's daughter, Zindzi Mandela, in attendance at the premiere, had told reporters before the screening began: "My father is fine. He's 95 years old, and he is pretty frail. We are hoping to see more of him."
She had noted that based on clips of the film she had seen previously, "I love it. I think it's authentic."
