SAHRC: 45 complaints against FHM model

2012-05-08 11:50
Cape Town - The South African Human Rights Commission has said it received 45 complaints against model Jessica Leandra dos Santos regarding her racist tweet, but the commission has received none against actress Tshidi Thamana for a racist tweet posted in retaliation, reports IOL.

On Thursday, former FHM Model winner Dos Santos posted the following message on her Twitter account: "Just, well took on an arrogant and disrespectful kaffir inside Spar. Should have punched him, should have."

At the weekend Tshidi Thamana posted the following message in response:

"Dear Mr Peter Mokaba?? I wish all whites had been killed when you sang 'Kill the Boer', then we wouldn’t have to experience @JessicaLeandra’s racism."

Dos Santos' post has since been removed and she posted an apology on her website while Thamana's Twitter account has been deactivated.

Vincent Moaga, the spokesperson for the SAHRC, has expressed the commission's concern over the presence of discrimination on social media platforms.

IOL reports Moaga said: "The commission is currently processing several complaints relating to remarks that Ms Jessica Leandra dos Santos posted on Twitter. In addition, the commission has received complaints relating to racist remarks that have been made by others on Facebook."

On Monday Democratic Alliance spokesperson Mmusi Maimane also expressed the party's concern over the damage that has been done by the racist tweets. He offered his home as as a place for the two models to reconcile.

    that's just plain disgusting.

      Squeegee - 2012-05-08 12:54

Can they both be charged with being brainless twits who tweeted twaddle?

  • Jaja - 2012-05-08 12:09

They should both get complaints. Who actually files these complaints, I want to file one against both of them and kevin sinclair.

      Meister01 - 2012-05-08 12:24

Personally I think all the complaints about the latter has reached file no 13.

Proving once again that black racists are accepted in this country...

      Ronald - 2012-05-08 12:28

No, Eva. Some people have just reached the level of maturity that prevents them from feeling sorry for themselves or having infantile, knee-jerk reactions to brainless comments or actions from people. In the one tweet an insult is used, in the other the idea of genocide is promoted. Now which is more reprehensible? It shows how the perceptions of South Africans have been modified to make the suggestion of extermination of a race more acceptable than a racial insult.

I just made a complaint against Tshidi. Wonderful Afrikaans expression: "Wat goed is vir deler, is goed vir die steler"

  • Mewik - 2012-05-08 12:24

I still don't know who either of these two are and before I read these articles I had never even heard of them. Wish it had stayed that way.

  • sean.redmond3 - 2012-05-08 12:31

I have emailed a complaint. What is good for one is good for the other. info@sahrc.org.za

DA's statement is just a bluff. The party should have been more concerned about its leader's recent remark, which wholesaley made black people refugees in their own country. Lack of tangible (eg disciplinary action) against its own leader goes to show how opportunistic is the party.

      richard.hipkin - 2012-05-08 12:54

@David, no one in the DA called black people refugees.. Did you learn this from your ANCYL?

      richard.hipkin - 2012-05-08 12:55

@David, actually your comments are really idiotic...

      jacques.smit - 2012-05-08 13:02

@david.lebethe Go to school and go learn how to read in English, then go study what was said, and how that relates to "refugees".. Get your facts straight before you come here to make a fool of yourself.. seriously... damn

  • mskittylicious - 2012-05-08 12:37

Two young models in your HOME for reconciliation? My foot!

  • Hermann - 2012-05-08 12:46

Dos Santos' sin is she is white whereas Tshidi is not white and therefore can not make any racist remarks regardless. We are a bunch of hypocrites, are we not?

  • jaysonpaul.beckwith - 2012-05-08 12:49

So miss Thsidi. You wish me and and family DEAD.....be very careful for what you wish for you dumb bimbo.

  • robert.cerff - 2012-05-08 12:49

Seriously... I wonder why such an uproar. I think somehow the irony in Tshidi's tweet will be lost on her. I'm going with a freedom of speech here. Surely people are allowed to hate others if they like, it's what they actually act out that's more important. But that coin does have two sides, both appear to have been pretty stupid in publicly making a point that may cost them a lot more. They've obviously both made it pretty difficult for any decent brand to associate with them, and no doubt cost both of them a career in any public capacity. If only everyone who made public utterences such as these were treated with as much disdain. Freedom of speech is just that free, but the consequence is a whole other thing. I think as long as people identify these individuals and refuse to deal with them entirely we'll have better results than charging everyone with "hate speech".

  • neil.kroese - 2012-05-08 12:53

E-mailing them will not work. Go to http://www.sahrc.org.za/home/index.php?ipkContentID=57 and file an official complaint. And do it English to make sure it is read and understood. Nutteloos om te wil hardegat wees

  • asivhanga - 2012-05-08 12:59

For how long are we going to reconcile with this fools? It seems they have a right to use \k\ word and apologise and everything is alright....he/she has apoligise lets forgive him/her. Racist remarks must get harsh punishment.

  • Taryne - 2012-05-08 13:05

Both were wrong in their tweets. I think Racism is DISGUSTING, whether it comes from a white, black, coloured or indian person. Regardless whether complaints have been made both should be charged. Its people that have that mind set and that way of thinking that keep this country from moving forward!

  • wesley.bischoff - 2012-05-08 13:22

One stupid blonde white racist, does not represent the entire white population of this country. Just like the dof black lady that responded with racism does not represent the entire black community in this country. Judge the individual, not the group. Both parties should be disciplined. But then again, so should all the racist remarks made by politicians.

      Prudence Pelembe - 2012-05-08 13:31

      Thank u:)

      Wally Walters - 2012-05-08 13:42

as long as this gov keeps aparthied and racism alive it will never change; fullstop.

  • Stlouis Heidtmann - 2012-05-08 13:46
