Racist tweet models meet for breakfast

Cape Town - Jessica Leandra and Tshidi Thamana have apologised to the nation.

The two models met on Thursday morning for breakfast at the home of DA spokesperson Mmusi Maimane, who invited them to open a dialogue about their recent racially charged Twitter outbursts in an open letter.

Both women weathered a storm of criticism this week after Jessica posted a tweet on Thursday last week that read: "Just, well took on an arrogant and disrespectful kaffir inside Spar. Should have punched him, should have".

Tshidi then responded with: "Dear Mr Peter Mokaba?… I wish all whites had been killed when you sang 'Kill the Boer', then we wouldn't have to experience @JessicaLeandra's racism [sic]."

City Press politics reporter Carien du Plessis, who was part of a media contingent present at the meeting, posted two photos on Twitter of the models and Maimane as they faced the press.

"All concerned look a tad uncomfy and bruised," du Plessis captioned this photo.

Reporting from the meeting, Du Plessis added: "Jessica says she and Tshidi will work to get country to where it was a week ago. They apologise to all and each other."

Maimane is quoted as saying: "I'm not convinced that the girls are racists. They were immature in way they responded. Rescuing careers not the aim [of their meeting]."

Tshidi told journalists, "I have never wished death on anyone, was done out of anger." She also promised never to make those kinds of statements again.

Explaining another tweet in which she referred to a petrol attendant as an "African monkey", Jessica said: "I refer to myself as a monkey and my family as monkeys. African monkey wasn't meant as a racial slur."
