Reeva: Tropika tweets 'killer giveaway'

Cape Town – Tropika, the fruit drink brand sponsor behind the advertiser-funded reality show Tropika Island of Treasure 5, on Saturday tweeted about its "killer giveaway" promotion on the same day as the show started on SABC1 featuring late model Reeva Steenkamp who was shot and killed just two days earlier on Thursday.

Steenkamp, the girlfriend of the Olympic and paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius, was gunned down early on Thursday morning with gunshots to her head and body inside Pistorius’ home at the gated community of Silver Woods Estate.

A case of premeditated murder is being pursued against Pistorius who is set to appear in court again on Tuesday, the same day as a memorial service for Steenkamp will take place in Port Elizabeth.

A spokesperson for Tropika could not be reached on Saturday about the tweet and the decision to use words like "killer giveaway". On Saturday MyTropika tweeted: "Check out this killer giveaway: 100 cases of Tropika today and for da next x days!"

The tweet, which has since been removed, followed on the same day that Tropika Island of Treasure 5 started on SABC1.

'I don't have any regrets'

SABC1 and Stimulii, the producers behind the pre-recorded reality show set in Jamaica in which Steenkamp is one of the contestants, decided to go ahead with the broadcast of the first episode of the show on Saturday and said in statements on Friday and Saturday that the Steenkamp family didn't object.

"Following consultation with the Steenkamp family, Mrs Steenkamp, mother to the late Reeva Steenkamp, expressed her desire for the show to continue as scheduled."

On Saturday SABC1 flashed three different tribute cards before the start of the first episode and a tribute insert in the preceding programme.

The beginning of the first episode was also reedited and contained a clip of what appeared to be taken from Steenkamp's eventual exit interview. It shows her sitting under a palm tree close to a beach in Jamaica, saying "I don't have any regrets and I don't have any bitterness."

Also shown swimming with dolphins, Steenkamp said: "I take home with me so many amazing memories and things that are in here [point to head] and in here [point to heart] that I’ll treasure forever. I’m going to miss you all so much."

On Saturday several people shared their thoughts on social media about the appropriateness of the show starting on South Africa's public broadcaster given the tragic circumstances of Steenkamp's death.
