Reeva’s death is no joke, Khanyi

Johannesburg - Actress and talk show host Khanyi Mbau continues to steal the limelight at the Comedy Central Roast of Kenny Kunene – but not all of the attention has been favourable.

After the broadcast of the roast on Monday night, Mbau was criticised on Twitter for her “tasteless” Oscar Pistorius and Reeva Steenkamp jokes.

Mbau is one of several celebrities appearing in the comedy roasting of sushi-king-turned-politician Kunene, which premiered on Monday night.

“If I woke up next to you at 03:00 on Valentine’s Day, I put it to you, you wouldn’t make it to the toilet,” Mbau said on the show. It was an obvious reference to the night Pistorius shot and killed his girlfriend at his home in Pretoria.

The comment sparked sharp criticism on Twitter, with observers deliberating over humour at the expense of other people.

The account @JusticeForReeva tweeted: “Khanye [sic] Mbau & #RoastZA this is not a joke!”

Cherie from Pretoria agreed: “S.Africans have become so desensitised and accustomed to tragedy that people think it’s ok to make fun of it.”

Charmaine from Pretoria told them to “relax”.

The comedy roast pits celebrities against one another and is known for stinging jokes and below the belt humour.

Mbau’s vagina also took centre stage, with sexist insults ruling the night.
