Johannesburg - The wife and ten-year-old daughter of children's books illustrator Piet Grobler were killed in a car crash on their way to OR Tambo International Airport, according to a report on Wednesday.

Grobler and his brother, Diek Grobler, were both injured in the accident between Pretoria and the airport on Tuesday, reported Beeld newspaper.

Their car had broken down on the R21 and a bakkie crashed into the stationary vehicle.

Piet Grobler, his wife Marie, and his daughter Catherina were living in the United Kingdom where he is a lecturer in children's book illustrations in Cambridge.

He has illustrated more than 70 books.

Grobler has also done illustrations for South African magazines and newspapers, including the Sunday Times' Lifestyle section, and magazines Sarie and the now closed-down Insig.

He and his brother were both in stable conditions in hospital.

Dr Marietjie Grobler taught me how to play piano, how to sing and how to love music deeply. She was an amazing teacher and my heart is bleeding for her husband.

Piet, My wife Kathy and I are heart-broken about this tragedy. We have not interacted much over the last two decades but you were never far from our minds. You and Diek had been my favorite cousins. We fervently hope for full recovery of you both and wishing you the strength and desire to go on and do great things. Francois Grobler, Champaign, Illinois

Dr Marietjie Grobler ignited my love for playing the flute. I loved her and she was one of the kindest souls I have had the privilege of knowing. I remember how excited she was when she was pregnant with her daughter. I pray for Piet everyday.
