SA has lost a hero in Masondo - KZN premier

Durban - KwaZulu-Natal Premier Senzo Mchunu has expressed his sorrow at the death of Soul Brothers lead singer David Masondo.

"The news of the passing of David Masondo, an eminent South African Musician of note, has left a bitter taste in my mouth," Mchunu said in a statement.

"The nation has lost the hero, his family has lost the husband and a father and the youth has lost an idol who proved the longest staying power in the music industry since the formation of the Soul Brothers in 1974.

"As a province, it is always painful to see our own heroes departing the stage. As a son of the province, hailing from Hammersdale, David has not only inspired the nation, but has created an inspiration for the youth to follow on his footsteps."

Mchunu conveyed condolences to Masondo's family, his band and "everyone who was touched by his soulful music" on behalf of the provincial government and its people.

Masondo's death was announced by his band on their Facebook group.

“It is very sad to announce that the main man, the anchor man, the lead singer of our band, has passed on today at the age of 67,” they wrote.

“Rest in peace Mdavu mfo ka Masondo.”

In May, Masondo had been rushed to hospital after suffering from fatigue and exhaustion during a live performance.

According to Drum, the 67-year-old Soul Brothers member was rushed to hospital after an energetic performance in Port Elizabeth.

"Age is not on his side, running around a lot during a performance is not good for him," the band's management had said.

"After the performances he was weak and tired so we took him to hospital."

Soul Brothers have recorded over 30 albums since their formation in 1974.

According to www.music.org.za, the band was initially formed in KwaZulu-Natal and was one of the most successful proponents of the mbaqanga sound which dominated South African urban music for over three decades.

Family and friends of David Masondo are invited to share their memories and tributes, and to light a candle for him, on his profile at Remembered.co.za.
