Cape Town - Patrice Motsepe donated R1.2m to hip hop mogul Russell Simmons' Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation in New York on Saturday, reports Destiny Man.
The local billionaire was among a number of celebrities who donated a total of R16m to the foundation to help poor children in the United States learn artistic skills.
The mining magnate, whose wealth is estimated at around R23bn, topped the Sunday Times Annual Rich List last year. He also has his own soccer team, Mamelodi Sundowns.
He was joined at the event by movie producer Tyler Perry (who donated R800 000), Mariah Carey and her husband Nick Cannon as well as a litany of other celebrities in raising the funds.
The foundation was formed 17 years ago by the Simmons brothers - Russell, Danny and Joseph - with the intention of improving arts and culture in the US.
According to Destiny Man, Russell Simmons will be the main speaker at the second edition of the magazine's seminar series, Destiny Forum on 21 September.
The Def Jam Records co-founder is expected to give a talk based on success and self-mastery.
