SA wine at royal wedding in Monaco

Cape Town - The multi-award-winning wines of the Stellenbosch wine producer Haskell Vineyards will be served at the wedding reception of Prince Albert of Monaco and Charlene Wittstock, a former South African Olympic swimmer.

Grant Dodd, a partner in Haskell Vineyards, said they were excited and felt honoured that their wines had been chosen for the glamorous event. It could not have come as a complete surprise as Prince Albert had over the past five years been a regular visitor to the cellar and was the first member of Haskell Vineyards' platinum wine club.

"He is a big supporter of our wines and always full of compliments," said Dodd on Wednesday in a statement. "He played a big role in establishing our brand in Monaco, as well as to bring Haskell and Dombeya to the attention of wine lovers here and overseas."

Haskell Vineyards' Dombeya wines will be served in Monaco and afterwards at the royal couple's private event in Durban.

Executive head of Wines of South Africa (Wosa), Su Birch, said in her reaction that if a South African wine was chosen for a royal wedding, it only again shows the quality that comes from our premier wine cellars.
