Sea Point sculptures vandalised again

Cape Town - The sculptures of the girl "who wants to fly like a dragonfly" are soon going back home for a little love.

This follows several recent incidents where the sculptures on the Sea Point promenade were the victim of vandals.

"I do not know what to say. I just know that I'm not going to exhibit my art there for much longer," said the sculptor, Marieke Prinsloo-Rowe.

Another sculpture was found in pieces on the promenade on Tuesday. The girl in her red and white bathing suit was thrown from her pedestal, or knocked off, and landed in pieces on the ground.

Remove the sculptures

"They're all going back to my studio, where they can receive love again. They are like children who have been away from home for a long tme," said Prinsloo-Rowe.

This is the third incident in the past five weeks.

"I don't think I will exhibit my art in public spaces again soon, but it was a privilege to have the opportunity."

According to Prinsloo-Rowe, Tuesday's incident was the last sign that she should remove the sculptures.

According to Calvyn Gilfellen, head of Cape Town Routes Unlimited, the message that the vandals send is one of contempt.

"It's a shame when an artist is driven so far that she wants to remove her art. What the incident says is that we don't care or have respect for the area," he said.
