Shot singer's career may be over

Johannesburg - Idols singer Chad Saaiman, who was shot during a hijacking, is on a respirator in intensive care after two operations.

The 28-year-old former Idols contestant, who relocated to Johannesburg about four weeks ago, was shot in a botched hijacking in Glenhazel on his way from church.

Saaiman’s brother Lee, 32, said the star “was concerned about his singing because the bullet had hit his diaphragm”, an essential muscle system singers use to control breathing.

“The bullet is still in his body and the doctors have said it was the least of their concerns because it would surface to the skin, and only then will they remove it,” said Lee.

Lee said the hijackers were trying to steal his brother’s VW Polo at around 18:30 in the Glenhazel area, but the 2009 Sama nominated singer drove off.

The hijackers opened fire, hitting him in the ribs and puncturing his liver.

A security guard found him as he stumbled toward a gated community and alerted a homeowner who called an ambulance.

“Crime happens everywhere; he was unlucky.

“My mother was very emotional when she heard about the incident and we are hoping once he is well enough to travel, he can come back home,” said Lee.
