South Africans choose their 2010 favourites

Cape Town – It's been a particularly noteworthy year for entertainment, both at home and abroad. The 21st century is getting its chance to experience a royal fairytale wedding on the scale of Prince Charles and Diana's iconic 1981 nuptials after Prince William, their 28-year-old son, proposed to his long-time girlfriend Kate Middleton in October last year.

Julius Malema grabbed headlines for publically lashing out at British journalists and the box office enjoyed a particularly local flavour as movies like Liefling, Spud and Shucks Tshabalala’s Survival Guide to South Africa dominated the box office.

When these and other headline-making stories were put to the readers of News24 entertainment site Channel24.co.za in a Top 10 of 2010 survey taken over a period of 6 weeks, the results, collected from nearly 3 000 responses, showed that when it comes to entertainment, South Africans like their celebrity news scandalous, their music upbeat and poppy, their movies sparkly and tragic, and their newcomers young, very young.

Tiger or cheetah?

A clear winner in the category New Talent/Newcomer of the Year was 16-year-old pop sensation Justin Bieber, who edged out local rapping twins Locnville, with 35% of the vote. Snapping at Locnville's heels (with nearly 20% of the vote) was Idols champ Elvis Blue who grabbed 17%. Probably the most iconic personality of the year was Lady Gaga, who featured prominently in the results, nabbing Music Icon of the Year and taking third place in the Newsmaker of the Year category.

Tiger Woods, who made headlines for all the wrong reasons in 2010 after he was revealed to have cheated on wife Elin Nordegren multiple times, was voted Newsmaker of the Year, beating off Julius Malema, Herschelle Gibbs and Mel Gibson to the title with over 38% of the vote.

Gareth Cliff vs DJ Fresh

Controversial radio DJ and TV host Gareth Cliff (28.8%) beat out his 5FM colleagues DJ Fresh and Anele Mdoda to the coveted Radio Personality of the Year prize. In second place was 94.7 Highveld Stereo's Darren "Whackhead" Simpson (22%), and DJ Fresh in third with 19%.

Lindsay Lohan was given the dubious honour of Trainwreck of the Year with 25.4% of the vote, following her much-publicised drug and legal battles. Following closely was SA musician JubJub (23.5%) who is currently facing four murder charges following an accident in March in which four schoolchildren were killed. The marital woes of Joost van der West and Amore Vittone were enough to secure them the third spot (20.73%), with a few foul-mouthed tirades from Mel Gibson securing him fourth place (11.16%). Self-proclaimed bling queen Khanyi Mbau had to settle for fifth place with less than 7% of the vote.

In the survey's more light-hearted categories, Prince William and Kate Middleton were the resounding winners of the Couple of the Year category with 54% of the vote, followed by Katy Perry and Russell Brand in second place, and Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt in third. The 2010 Soccer World Cup and star-studded collaborations characterised the Music Video of the Year category, with Shakira and Freshlyground's WC theme song "Waka Waka" taking the title with a huge 47.5% of the vote, followed by "Love the Way You Lie" by Eminem and Rihanna and "Telephone" by Lady Gaga and Beyoncé.

Flop of the Year

Supernatural romance The Twilight Saga continued to fascinate audiences in 2010 with The Twilight Saga: Eclipse taking the Movie of the Year title with 28%, and followed by two unsurprising runners-up, in a very surprising order. Christopher Nolan's mind-bending sci-fi drama Inception came in second place with 14%, beating out one of the highest grossing releases this year – Leon Schuster's Shucks Tshabalala’s Survival Guide to South Africa (13.19%).

The year's flops were not out of bounds, and it was the big screen version of beloved South African TV drama Egoli: The Movie that was voted Flop of the Year with 25.46% of the vote. Also not finding favour with Channel24 readers was Rihanna’s bright red hair in second place, followed by Gordon Ramsay's visit to SA during which he apparently clashed with a few over-eager fans and failed to attend to guests who paid handsomely for the privilege of his company at his now-defunct Maze restaurant at the One & Only back in May.
