Suicidal soap star 'devastated' by split

2012-07-09 09:07
Cape Town – It has come to light that Binneland star Lindie Stander's suicide attempt could be due to her recent split from her fiancée, reports Beeld.

Stander got engaged to Lucille Koen, 33, in November 2010, but Koen broke it off with Stander in April 2012.

A close friend of the couple told Beeld that they had a turbulent relationship and often left each other during this time.

"The final break came shortly before KKNK this year. Lindie was totally devastated. I believe this setback opened old wounds again," the friend said.

30 scripts

Stander and her character of Nurse Elise in Binneland on kykNET will be permanently written out of the weekday soap produced by Stark Films, after she made a suicide attempt by allegedly cutting one of her arms open to the bone.

According to Beeld, some believe that a recent traumatic storyline in Binneland, which saw Stander play the lead role, could've also upset her psychologically. In the role, Stander, as sister Elise Kruger, had to come face to face with her uncle, who sexually abused her as a child.

Stander is currently under evaluation in the psychiatric unit of the Helen Joseph hospital, and was still under heavy sedation on Sunday.

Meanwhile, producers have started rewriting 30 scripts since Friday to make provision for recent developments.

Every day people split up, and for many life sucks. Suicide is not the answer. There is almost always an element of manipulation in suicide attempts, even if its just " You'll be sorry when I'm gone", which is designed to hurt those left behind. I support the producers decision to fire her. Her personal life should not hold the cast, crew and producers to ransom. On the other hand I wish her happiness and recovery.

@ squeegee.pilot, I understand that she was not the first or the last to be involved in a split and it is not only her life that sucks; that being said, let us try and understand a few things. 1. These circumstance may not be traumatic for you, the circumstances ARE traumatic for her. Depression is a sickness that shows no respect to religion, class, race or finanacial standings; like flu or the common cold any person can get depressed. 3. Unless you have walked in that person's shoes and know exactly 100% what constituted that thought process, do not judge or comment. 4. Society is more sick than you care to believe. 5. Have you ever thought (and I am not talking about a brain fart) how much courage it takes to actually to follow through with a suicide? Where was she manipulating anyone? She was weak and wanted to end her life, she hurt herself first before hurting others. Your day of judgement is coming and you too will be measured by your own standards; I hope you or those close to you do NOT get blessed by your words. Blessed are the humble.

Actually isi...... I do have experience of suicides and attempted suicides. I fully comprehend that there are people with severe depression, etc, etc. However, many of the comments recently have almost condoned suicide or at the very least presented it as inevitable for those suffering from depression. The fact is that there are many issues and angles when it comes to attempted suicides. I feel for those who have in any way been involved as attemptees or their friends and families. Life is difficult and we must encourage people to seek other solutions or help.

      Preshen - 2012-07-10 08:36

I was going to become a suicide bomber but did not see a future in it

      amore.myburgh - 2012-07-10 16:35

@ isi.... she might not be manipulating anyone but shelfish she was/is, because it is not up to you to take your own life and to do this to your friends and family by taking your life. I recently went through a breakup but i had to get thru it, life does go on and if you pray, believe me He does get you thru the pain.

So funny how people always put suicide down to attention seeking. Do these people have any idea what it is like to be clinically depressed? guess not!

      Deon - 2012-07-09 10:34

Some people are parasuicidal and not suicidal, big difference in aim / goal.

      merven.halo - 2012-07-09 10:51

'So funny how people always put suicide down to attention seeking.' If you really want to commit suicide you'll do it right the first time (alone some where that no one will be able to help you). The majority of suicide attempts are a call for help.

      Anthea - 2012-07-09 12:35

She cut her arm to the bone. That is not attention seeking, that is a real desire to inflict physical pain on herself. A lot of people with emotional problems say they do things like that because the physical pain is easier to bear than the mental anguish.Have a little compassion, because one day you may be in her place, expecting people to understand your irrational actions.

      Deon - 2012-07-10 13:00

Cutting yourself to the bone without cutting the dangerous pulsating arteries (that you can feel) is attention seeking. She did not wanted to die. This is the difference between real suicide attemps and attention seeking behaviour.

Well sometimes things just get to much for a person.. its starts with one thing then gets worse when moren thuings happen. friends and family should just support anyone who is going through a break up.

i think that the Binneland writing team and story-line contrubuted to this... her character not only drifts from one unsucsesfull relationship to the other, she also did a recent piece where she gets confronted with her own past... not only child molestation, but also her broken relationships with her parents. Art comming to close to reality. For the producers to drop her now, with the whole world looking on, is really not helping her. In stead of being supportive, allowing her to get back on her feet... they kick her in the teath, on the national stage of reporting. Kyknet, a part of Multichoice, in the stable of News24, should take a huge amount of blame here. Depression and the resulting suicide attempts is not the way to fill your pockets with sensationalizing it.

      zimbobwe.mugabe - 2012-07-09 11:15

If the storyline is the problem why doesn't she quit and find another job??? If you have problems you just stay away and find something. I remembered this because it's the advise you always give here on news24 when farm-workers are underpaid and mistreated by the farmers. You all people always say they must quit and find another job. She needs to get her head checked, something is not lekker.

      squeegee.pilot - 2012-07-09 11:24

She's an ACTRESS. Must script writers take every cast member's background and feelings into account before writing a story? Get real. "Hey, Will Smith, how are you feeling today? Any relationship problems? We just want to rewrite your script for the day to suite your personality"

  • mrp721 - 2012-07-09 10:26

I can almost guarantee you the split was not the reason, maybe a final contributing factor but it wasn't the main reason... People need to learn about depression, and severe depression etc before criticizing. Suicide is never the answer but until you go through the everyday living and feelings and and and etc of what these people go through, rather keep your comments to yourself, get educated before showing your foolishness in comments!!!

      chez.kri - 2012-07-09 14:34

@mrp. Well put; we don't know what goes on in this womans heart. She must be in such a bad way and all these negative comments are not helping. A little compassion would be good.

  • colin.d.beer - 2012-07-09 10:40

ons dink aan jou Lindie! Alle sterkte!!!

  • lmarx2 - 2012-07-09 11:10

You guys can write all the stuff that you want (whether you wish to agree or not). Remember that it's Lindie's life and what she chooses do has absolutely nothing to do with anyone. We have no right to comment on stuff we know nothing about. Try to be more tolerant towards your fellow human beings. This is a very sad story and I wish Lindie and good recovery and that she will receive all the positive supportive to help her heal.

      zimbobwe.mugabe - 2012-07-09 11:24

Why should I feel sorry for her if she chooses to kill herself??? You are right it's her choice and there will be consequences.

  • Bless Boswell - 2012-07-09 11:16

I am prepared to put money on the fact that the people who accuse her of seeking attention have never been depressed and even if they have been, they would not know what it was. It a calamity of enormous proportions and requires understanding and compassion. Unless you have stood in those shoes you are not qualified to judge.

  • Gerald - 2012-07-09 12:23

I agree with the write who said that she was seeking for attention, few years ago my girlfriend for 7years lift me over a minor disagreement and wanted to punish me, she immediately started dating, few weeks down the line she inform the guy that she’s quitting. One day she came home and fined that the guy had committed suicide. Some people are not emotionally strong; in this case both of them are wrong, secondly we should stop condoning suicide no matter the circumstances we should look up go on our keens and ask God for help

  • chez.kri - 2012-07-09 14:31

Oh this is just so sad. Her heart must be in a very bad place. My thoughts are with you Lindie and i wish you "sterkte" during this awful time in your life.

  • herbst.rinaldi - 2012-07-09 15:19

Rinaldi Herbst

      ronelle.durandt - 2012-07-11 09:12

Staan eerder vir Lindie by.

  • Deidre Ruiters - 2012-07-09 15:48

hope she get well soon, and loads of support from family and friends.......she will need it!!!

  • diane.bester1 - 2012-07-09 22:36

Lindie.. Sterkte en jy is my beste karakter op Binneland! Love you lots! Baie jammer dat jy nie meer daar te siene gaan wees nie!

  • janet.weyers.71 - 2012-09-25 16:58

I feel sorry for Lindi Stander. I watch Binneland every week night, and think that she is a very good actress. Jammer vir jou Lindie, maar ek weet jy gaan ok wees. Sterkte. Janet
