Sun, snoek and school for Charlize Theron

Johannesburg - Hollywood superstar Sean Penn celebrated his 54th birthday by eating crayfish and snoek at a rustic South African restaurant with his girlfriend, Charlize Theron, last Sunday, City Press reports.

What’s more, the Tinseltown A-lister shared his chocolate birthday cake with fellow patrons after lunch at the Strandloper Restaurant, which overlooks the Langebaan lagoon on the west coast, about 125km from Cape Town.

Penn, Theron, her mother, Gerda, and baby Jackson had their toes in the sand at the casual open-air restaurant.

The party of 12 sat on benches around a concrete table, feasting on a 10-course meal prepared over braai fires in huge black cast iron pots. The seafood buffet costs R250 a head.

The restaurant’s owner, Justin Maltby, told City Press that Penn brought his own birthday cake from Cape Town. “It was a beautiful cake and delicious. We all tasted it,” he said.

“The party was very relaxed. They were very nice and natural. They asked in advance that we do not take pictures or ask for autographs.”

During the day, Jackson played with a Chihuahua named Peanut, whose owner, Lynette Krige, was seated at a nearby table.

Krige, a travel agent from Durbanville, told Die Burger: “Charlize asked me if I minded her son playing with Peanut. She didn’t want him to bother us.”

Two-year-old Jackson is used to four-legged friends – he and his mother have two rescue dogs at their home in Los Angeles.

Since the family’s temporary relocation to Cape Town a month ago, Jackson has been enrolled at a school on the foothills of Table Mountain.

City Press will not divulge the name of the historic school to protect his privacy. However, we can reveal that the toddler’s class is rehearsing for a junior primary concert – so he may just follow in his mummy’s Oscar-winning footsteps.

Granny Gerda is lending a hand looking after Jackson while Theron works on filming Penn’s latest directorial effort, The Last Face, around the Mother City with co-star Javier Bardem.

The family is staying at the posh Mount Nelson Hotel, where Gerda has been soaking up luxury treatments at the Librisa Spa, which sprawls across the hotel’s west wing.

“The Nelly” is famous for high tea spreads that see tables groan under flowers, frosted cakes and silverware during the afternoons. Theron seems to have given the decadent teas a wide berth, because photographs by US tabloids show her looking trim on sets around Cape Town.

Meanwhile, the starlet and her beau have been seen out and about in the Mother City.

On Wednesday Penn was spotted at the swish newly refurbished Cape Town Club in Queen Victoria Street, where he apparently enjoyed a chinwag into the early morning hours.

Theron has become a regular sighting at The Duchess of Wisbeach, a romantic Sea Point restaurant lined with dark wood and mirrors.

Staff at the restaurant confirmed her patronage, but would not share details.
