Tears flow on final Grant, Anele 5FM show

Cape Town - Just hours after Sasha Martinengo bid farewell to his listeners after 18 years at 5FM, Grant Nash and Anele closed off their final show together on the radio station.

The two young DJs, who cut their teeth together on campus station TuksFM, were both in tears as they paid tribute to each other and their colleagues during an emotionally charged show.

Anele talked about how Grant helped her deal with the death of her mother, while Grant honoured his friendship with Anele, as a woman he knew he would "never have a sexual relationship with".

'I love you very, very much'

Anele will be leaving 5FM to take on a new radio show on Highveld 94.7, while Grant, a practising Buddhist and vegan, will be moving to Nepal where he is believed to be taking a vow of silence.

"Grant I'm not going to miss you, I'm going to miss us," said a sniffling Anele.

"My sister, my co-host, my mentor. I love you very, very much," said Grant to his co-host.

The final song they played on their show was Mr Jones by Counting Crows.

The show also featured tributes to the pair from Grant's mother, and his mentor former 5FM DJ Mark Gillman, who currently resides in London.

During Grant and Anele's final show, listeners took to Twitter to share their thanks and tributes to the DJ pair.

"So sad I'm missing @Anele 's last day on 5fm, it's crazy busy at work. Take a bow Young Xhosa Girl! Usebenzile! [sic]" wrote @Syfokazi.

"@Anele never knew what emotional bonds I formed with voices on the radio until today, all the best for the future," wrote @Bookhan_chick.

"tears jst flowed uncontrollably wen angie said her goodbyes....*cried in silence*....." wrote @lilkayza.

"@GrantNash @Anele thanx for making me blive dat radio is for everyone. I'm inspired by u guys dat I want a career in radio. Love u lots. [sic]" wrote @babyhali.

Incumbent 5FM DJ Rob Forbes, who takes over Sasha's 09:00 to 12:00 from Monday 2 April, shared his appreciation for Grant and Anele via Twitter: "I've known @Anele and @GrantNash personally since their graveyard shows on campus radio. You two are wonderful. I'll miss you."

Rob Vember and Kim Schulze will be taking over Grant and Anele 12:00-15:00 show from Monday. 5FM's new line-up takes effect on 1 April.
