There's a new love in Steve's life

Bloemfontein - In front of a large audience in Bloemfontein Steve Hofmeyr revealed that there is a new love in his life. "Writing is my new love. It is a new life that have been exploring in recent years. If I can get a couple of people to read, it will be great for me."

Hofmeyr spoke about his new novel, Die Verste Uur, his third prose text, in a packed Exclusive Books in Mimosa Mall.

"It is great to be in Bloemfontein. I always feel like a little laaitie from Basywater when I'm here."

His mother Carien Hofmeyr, his girlfriend Janine van der Vyver and Johan Volsteedt, headmaster of Grey College who taught Afrikaans to Hofmeyr, attended the launch. He presented both his mother and Volsteedt with a copy of his book.

"These people made a difference in my life, I would like to thank Mr Volsteedt for the wonderful example he set for all those years. And my mother, I thank her for the privilege of growing up with books."

Critics responded with praise to Die Verste Uur.

"I am definitely not a seasoned writer. But I enjoy it. Some say the book is a fantasy or science fiction novel where time travel takes place. To me, it’s a romance."

'Modern perspective'

Hofmeyr also noted the importance of representing the contemporary Afrikaner. "And that is what I tried to do. Set a modern perspective."

There are several places he would choose to go if he could time travel. "I would have loved to be there when Jesus delivered his Sermon on the Mount. I will ask him what it all meant, because I want to know. I would also like to meet William Shakespeare to hear whether he speaks the same as he writes."

Hofmeyr also revealed a little about a new novel he is working on. It is titled Kapabel and 50 pages have already been completed.

"I don’t want to say too much. But it is about mechanic who gets millions of Rand over night. The question is, does the mechanic stay the same person."
