Famous for her hilarious do-it-yourself videos, Suzelle DIY has released her very own book. We spoke to her about life as a YouTube star and her best friend, Marianne.

You’re a celebrity, a YouTube sensation and friends with Nataniël...

Ja, well I have his number in my phone. So maybe I will invite him to a dinner party. I am going to prepare something very special for him. He will love it, and he will tell his friends that he had such a wonderful time.

Yes, he definitely deserves it. Why did you release a book?

You know, I was doing the videos, and then the publisher came and said: ‘Suzelle, you should make a book.’ And then I thought to myself, that’s an interesting idea! Because why? A book is also very visual and it will give people more information; they can read it and they can see the pictures, and I just had this amazing picture in my mind of photos with lots of DIY and recipes. I was so excited, so I said let’s do it! But it was hard work, the book.

What advice can you give aspiring YouTube stars?

First and foremost, just go for it! Don’t think too hard, just do it. YouTube is a brilliant place because people from everywhere can see it and access it. Also, when you make a video, you must share it on all the different platforms. I’m learning about all these things now. Marianne is very good on the computer, so she teaches me this. You must also make your video short so that it doesn’t take, like, 15 minutes to watch a video – that’s too long!

Are you making money?

You know, what is very exciting is I have some people now who are my sponsors. So they say, ‘Suzelle, can you do something with boerewors?’ for example. And I will say ‘Okay, because I like boerewors.’ And then they will give me a little bit of money so someone can help me with the camera and someone can help me with the light, and I can get somebody to help me with my make-up. But actually I do my own make-up, just so you know.

On Valentine’s Day you dropped off a nice breakfast at the door of your crush’s house. Did you get a response?

Ja, now look. Okay. The answer is no. But I always say: keep trying!

It is tough out there and I think, I don’t know why he didn’t like me back. But you know what? There are many, many fish in the sea and that fish just wasn’t the fish for me. So it’s okay. I’ve got my eye on somebody else now, so...

Tell us! It’s not Tim Noakes is it?

No! He is very old. But he’s a very nice guy, shame. But I’ve got my eyes on someone – but it’s a secret.

Aw, okay. Where is Marianne today?

Unfortunately, she is not here. She was supposed to come, but she got the dates wrong. Because why? I told her to write it in her diary and she didn’t. But I will tell her she was missed.

What projects do you have in the pipeline?

So, spoiler alert! Some Christmas episodes. I’m excited for that. Oh, and I might be doing a bit of travelling! You will see me in exotic places.

Moja Love's drug-busting show, Sizokuthola, is back in hot water after its presenter, Xolani Maphanga's assault charges of an elderly woman suspected of dealing in drugs upgraded to attempted murder. In 2023, his predecessor, Xolani Khumalo, was nabbed for the alleged murder of a suspected drug dealer. What's your take on this?
