Johannesburg - The University of Pretoria has claimed the top spot in South Africa's fourth Annual Intervarsity Beer Brewing Challenge for the second consecutive year.
The Intervarsity Brewing Challenge 2011 took place over the weekend at The South African Breweries' (SAB) Training Institute in Kyalami, Johannesburg.
The University of Pretoria team's brew claimed the prestigious Ben Lamaletie IBD Intervarsity Beer Challenge floating trophy donated by the IBD, a cash prize for each team member and bursaries to further their studies.
The university claimed 1st prize for the Best Lager and Best Ale during the competition, while another big winner, Rhodes University, was awarded first place in the Speciality Beer category and the prize for Best Label.
The champions tested their beer making skills against nine South African universities with microbreweries during a rigorous weekend of judging. Other participating universities included the University of Cape Town, the University of Stellenbosch, the University of Witwatersrand, University of KwaZulu Natal (UKZN) Pietermaritzburg and Westville campus', the University of Limpopo, Rhodes University, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) and the University of Johannesburg.

Each style category has specific tasting guidelines and is judged according to international standards. The judging panel is made up of experienced accredited Craft Beer tasters and judges from home brewing clubs based in Gauteng.
"The standard, quality and the maturity of the entries has grown this year. It's a case of practice makes perfect with students keeping to the trueness of the style, which was exquisite. There were no losers in this competition and the judges had a very difficult time deciding on the winners," said Anton Erasmus, SAB Trade Brewer.
University-based microbreweries, most of which are set up with funding from SAB, serve as valuable teaching aids for students involved in microbiology, chemical technology and engineering programmes. Students brew, ferment, condition and package their beers at their university microbreweries prior to the competition.
