UFS hopes for Oprah cheque

Bloemfontein – Bloemfontein is ready for talk show queen Oprah Winfrey who will receive an honorary doctorate from the University of the Free State on Friday.

The UFS is also pitching a proposal to the billionaire philanthropist upon her visit, which includes showing her the plans for a new ultramodern student lounge next to the institution's library. The hope is that she will pull out her cheque book to support this project and maybe others.

Winfrey is apparently very interested in projects that focus on interaction between students. The UFS refused to comment on whether she will make a donation.

As part of the world-class treatment she will receive at Kovsies, Winfrey will have her own private lounge in the university's institute for international studies on race, reconciliation and social justice.

Fake tickets

Special guests have been invited to sit in the front row during the ceremony. Among them is Shéri Brynard, a well-known down syndrome leader and motivational speaker as well as Elsje Blair, former journalist and cancer activist who has inspired thousands with her battle against the illness. Both are from Bloemfontein.

The bodyguard expert Rory Steyn is believed to have been appointed to protect Winfrey during her quick visit to the city. Steyn was head of former president Mandela’s protection unit. His company protected the World Cup trophy and visiting dignitaries last year.

A UFS spokesperson warned in a statement that people who attempt to use forged tickets to attend the event would be prosecuted.

The doors of the Callie Human Hall will open at 13:00 and will close at 14:00. Journalists from America and Britain are expected to be in attendance.
