At the personal invitation of the president of the UN General Assembly, singer Nomsa Mazwai will perform in New York with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and musician Paul Simon’s band.
The event is aimed at highlighting the “transformative power of music” and will be presided over by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
“The levels of excitement in my life are through the roof. There are no words to describe this. Every time I get an email from the UN team, my heart jumps a little,” Mazwai told #Trending.
Despite having a South African Music Award in the bag, this is her biggest undertaking yet.
“My music speaks to socioeconomic issues. I’m not afraid to talk about political issues. I tackle the reality of living in South Africa, and I think that’s in line with the UN’s values,” she said.
Mazwai will also be working with musical director Robin DiMaggio, who has worked with big names, including Tupac and Daft Punk.
She also recognises what this means for the country: “I think this shows that you don’t have to be the most famous person in South Africa to have a voice that resonates with people.
