Vandals target Sea Point sculpture

Cape Town - One of the 18 life-size sculptures on the Sea Point promenade was removed after being damaged by vandals.

Grabouw artist Marieke Prinsloo-Rowe's sculpture series, Walking the Road, has been on the promenade since June last year. It consists of 18 variations on the theme "The girl who wants to fly like a dragonfly".

Three of the sculptures in the series that shows a girl playing with a dragonfly, was damaged over the past year.

Sculpture number 14's arm was broken off last month.

According to Prinsloo-Rowe, the latest incident took place on Saturday night.

Prinsloo-Rowe came from Grabouw to Sea Point to remove the sculpture for repairs. "I removed it on Monday. I have since started work on a new sculpture, which will be back on its rightful place by Monday. "

According to Prinsloo-Rowe it's amazing how much support she received in the meantime. "People have called to share their condolences over the sculpture, and they were really unhappy."
