Johannesburg - South Africans will finally have the opportunity to see cartoonist Zapiro's satirical puppet show ZNews - this time, on the internet.
After more than two years of struggling with the SABC, Zapiro (Jonathan Shapiro) and producer Thierry Cassuto decided to rule out television completely.
From now on, ZNews will be broadcast on the www.znews.tv website. Users can also download the material onto their cellphones.
The SABC approved Zapiro and Cassuto's proposal for the programme in 2007, and instructed them to produce the first episode.
However, the SABC reneged on the agreement before it was even broadcast.
Programme cancelled
In April, the SABC decided not to broadcast a planned Special Assignment programme about satire. At the time, SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said that the programme's planned broadcast on SABC3 was cancelled due to a recommendation from their legal team.
The programme's theme was "Satire and cartoons as editorial tools in the South African media landscape". Excerpts from ZNews would have formed part of the programme.
Shortly thereafter, the Mail & Guardian newspaper placed unedited material from the programme on its website.
Last week it was revealed that the SABC had asked the crew of Special Assignment to take lie detector tests, to determine who had leaked the programme.
Life-size puppets of former president Thabo Mbeki, President Jacob Zuma and Julius Malema (leader of the ANC Youth League), among others, were made for ZNews. These can now be seen on the web broadcast.
