After criticism, DStv replaces repeats with new shows

Johannesburg - In a battle for viewership with its rivals, MultiChoice and DStv this week released a new line-up of shows aimed at reducing the repeats that have attracted criticism from viewers.

The team used the magnificent five-star African Pride Mount Grace Country House & Spa in Magaliesburg, Gauteng, to showcase its newly recruited presenters and actors, who it hopes will wrestle viewers away from e.tv and the struggling SABC.

Journalists went straight to the business of the day, which was to review new shows and those coming back for a second season.

If you had written off Papa Penny, think again – the flamboyant musician seems to have reinvented himself and has brushed up on his stage performances. With his reality show ratings seemingly growing and TV viewers showing him some love, he went out of his way to inject some energy into his music. He gave his best when he sang his hit song Ahee.

MultiChoice’s general manager of content, Aletta Alberts, addressed the complaints received from DStv users, saying these had decreased by 12%, which was an indication that they were listening and responding to their customers by finding ways to improve the quality of the shows.

The M-Net team has declared March 31 as National Movie Day, which will mark South Africa’s first outdoor movie extravaganza.

However, you’ll have to watch the headlines and adverts to find out the details because they were withheld to keep the public guessing and salivating.

The theme of the event was “supersized”, and the #dstv2017 tag on Twitter ended up trending for the whole day.

Supersized DStv shows include Big Little Lies, which stars Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon; Powerless; Taken, which is a series based on the film trilogy; and Training Day.

Later, journalists and guests were treated to a home-grown movie that showcased this country’s film production.
