City Press celebrates four decades of fashion with Marianne Fassler

Johannesburg - There’s no doubt that design doyenne Marianne Fassler is a fashion icon.

This week, she revealed her Autumn/Winter Collection and celebrated four decades of fashion at Leopard Frock in Saxonwold, Johannesburg. I couldn’t help but feel honoured to be travelling through her treasure trove of fashion, art and crafts.

When entering the gates of Fassler heaven, we were instructed to take two balloons off the fence, selecting two words starting with the letter F that defines you. I chose fierce and feminist.

See a piece from the collection here:

Throughout the evening, models wearing Fassler’s latest collection roamed around as guests moved in and out of the space, which looks like a fantasy closet for any lover of fashion.

Guests included artist Lady Skollie, whom I overheard telling someone that she has made more money in the past six months than she previously did in a year. Claps for Lady Skollie!

Others in attendance included Papama Ramogase, the owner of kids fashion label Butter Pudding, publicist and designer Maria McCloy, Zimbabwean artist and activist Kudzanai Chiurai, some of whose work hangs on the walls in Fassler’s home, singer Thandiswa Mazwai and former politician Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi, who says her relationship with Fassler spans years. Fassler designed Fraser-Moleketi’s daughter Thando’s wedding dress last year.

Friendly Fraser-Moleketi, who was accompanied by her son Solomzi, says she loves wearing clothes made by designers on this continent, and the clothes she wore on the evening were from Ivory Coast designer Pathe’O and Zimbabwe-born Clive Rundle.

Fassler’s new collection includes bold dark hues, with elements of animal print and fur with eccentric structures.

This was a fitting celebration of Fassler’s acclaimed career.
