Fifi Cooper: I’m no little sister any more

Hardly a month after breaking ranks with Ambitiouz Entertainment over money issues, Fifi Cooper has released a new single under her own record company in a bid to make her mark.

“I have grown ... and I should not be treated like a little sister any more,” says 25-year-old Refilwe Mooketsi – known by her stage name of Fifi Cooper.

Oozing confidence and wearing her radiant smile, this hip-hop queen who hails from Mafikeng in North West says she is ready to stand on her own in the male-dominated music industry.

She joins a very short list of female artists who own their own record labels, which includes Toya Delazy of Delazy Entertainment and Mshoza, who owns Fresh Money Family Productions.

She says that, while she expects challenges and tough times ahead for her new label, MoCooper Records, she is mentally ready to weather the storm.

“Just because I am a woman in the industry, I should not be underrated. I mean business and deserve to be me,” she says emphatically; promising to break chart records in the near future.

Mooketsi says that her new single, called Power of Gold, is meant “to clear the air”.

In this song she shares some of her experiences regarding “everything that went down with my previous management team at Ambitiouz”, she explains.

She goes on to say that the gist of the matter was money and how it changed people.

“I am Motswako’s first lady, so the people will enjoy the album when we release it [late this year] because it will be more of the Motswako music genre.”

Mooketsi says she plans to have fun under her own record label and to get down to the “busy of doing more of what I love, which is music”.

“It is a great feeling that I took this decision, and most of the industry people are behind me. They are also guiding me on how to run it. We have to move on in life.

“I cannot be holding on to things that bring me stress; that era has passed. So, I am living my life in the greener pasture,” she confidently says.

Mooketsi confesses that her record label has been bubbling under the surface, as she started investing and slowly building it some time ago.
